There's relatively-minor levels of corporate dishonesty (think Mazda overrating the early RX8 at 250hp, or perhaps even Hyundai and its fuel consumption claims), and then there's VW and its concerted and intentional effort to cheat regulations.

Yes, most corporations (I hesitate to label ALL) will play fast and loose with the truth at some point, but VW's dieselgate was a whole next level based on scale, and how much work it required to pull off the cheat, and then cover it up.

Corporate dishonesty isn't an on-off switch, it's more of an analog spectrum.

Do you guys get the Hybrid Corollas? Over here we only get the 1.2 Turbo, 1.8 Hybrd or the new 2.0 Hybrid which has about 180bhp but obviously decent torque thanks to the batteries. Quite tempted by one.

1.8 hybrid here not till 2020 but the batteries would be NiMH and not Li-Ion.

Yes, in Spring 2019, but only in a 4-door sedan model.

The 1.8 is a bread and butter engine over here. It's the new 2.0 that peaks my interest as it's being touted the more fun car as the 1.8 is the genuine economy model.

It sounds like the saloon/sedan is coming this way, but not with the 2.0. A bit of a shame as I like the looks. I just need to think about whether I prefer the hatch or the TS.

I've been considering the Corolla for my wifes car, its time to replace the Yaris. When I take my car in for the valve spring recall I may request a corolla hatchback as a rental as I might buy it.

This is exactly what I did. Same consideration ( replacing a junk Nissan Sentra from 09) and I am far from disappointed. I generally am terribly phobit of the new tech in these cars, but it's non invasive, it's easy to figure out, you can disable traction control easily and in a way, the interior feels similar to the 86. The large tablet screen is uninuitive and strange. This may not be a new thing, but the convex mirrors make backing up WITHOUT the camera difficult if you're not used to them. I thought I was going to hit my garage door when I was still 6 feet from it Snow/salt was covering my backup camera so I couldn't reference it anyway.

I like how the accelerator handles input, the car doesn't have much body roll, it rides well over bumps... it's a comfortable car! Push to start is neat too.

I tried to get my wife interested in the Corolla hatch but she didn't like the blue colour.
As you can see it clearly is horrible compared to the Impreza blue that she really liked!

My wife actually really likes the color, I haven't test drove one yet. I'm only looking at the 2019 corolla hatchback since they gave it an updated chassis and engine. I think I read they improved stiffness by 60% which is impressive in this price segment. I hate the way the old Corolla hatchback looked (one you posted vs the one below). The blue is actually a different shade, reminds me of the hyper blue colors Subaru offered once. Has your wife looked at the new '19 Corolla hatch in blue vs the old one?

Nah we bought the Impreza. Maybe in 2020 when she changes again. I do agree the newer ones look much better than the 17. Haven't drove one yet though.

It's a recall so a repair lasting over a day like the valve springs should get you a free loaner vehicle.
