Need some advice guys. So I went to my local Subaru dealership and checked out a 14' WRB BRZ Limited. Basically I gave him the number I was quoted by Clint from Hueberger motors. Hes trying to tell me that purchasing the vehicle from him I would save money and would be less of a hassle.

Heres the email of the conversation between me and the salesman.

"Good Morning Kris,

Out the Door includes sales tax based on the address where you register the car plus $80 documentation fee + the Registration which is about 1.5%. You can at about ten percent to the actual price of what I quote you if you live in Fresno. There are no other charges and we can’t negotiate or change the taxes, the DMV or the Doc fee. Any dealer quoting you an out the door price is usually tax based on where they are located. That’s not how it works. The tax & DMV are a percent of the sale price. So a guy in Colorado can’t even figure what your sales tax will be now can I do it for someone in Denve.

We will have different cars in a couple months as these BRZs move out of here fast.

If you buy the 2013 in Colorado for $26,100 plus shipping costs shipping costs to here, you’ll be at least $26,500 plus whatever other charge he had on that forum post. THEN you add 8.225% sales tax which is $2180, then DMV registration which will be about $390. That is $29,070. And you will pay the DMV and sales tax in a lump sum when you register it here because the Colorado dealer can’t register it for you. Then add the 10% for registering an out-of-state car here, that is another $2,650. So you will pay $31,720 to buy the car in Colorado and register it here.

If you buy the BRZ we looked at, a 2014 Limited Blue model stock #E9602762 for $27,900 + tax ($2295) + DMV ($419) + DOC Fee ($80) then you’re only paying $30,693 and saving the hassle of getting it registered after you get it because we process all that paper work. You would save a little over $1,000.

So that’s what I was talking about. It doesn’t really matter until you’re ready to buy, I’m sure the 2013 will be gone in Colorado and we’ll have a different selection here too. One thing I hope you can see it that we are totally transparent in how we work with you. Also, I will give you the best deal possible when you’re ready. Looking forward to working with you. Have a great holiday and New Year!

Ed Monson"

Are his comments correct? What would one of you guys do if you were in my position? I have enough cash to buy outright, Im just trying to get the best deal possible.

Help me please!

HAHAHAHAHAH.

Let's see:

$26100 car
$2429 registration + tax (use tax is actually $2147 in Clovis, Fresno County 93611)
$50 smog
however much it costs to ship the car

There is NO WAY a Heuberger car can be $31720. I have no idea how stupid his math is, but

The bullshit parts are:
1) 10% "out of state" registration"
2) his tax calculation... does he even know what the fuck $26100 * 8.225% comes out to?
3) his DMV registration estimation... $390? Really?

Sorry, if you are paying $26100 for the car itself, your total price less shipping would be around $28579 + shipping. Even if you spent $2k on shipping you'd still be cheaper buying from CO.

If you want, print this shit out and throw it in the guy's face. 10% "out of state"? yeah, what an honest salesman.

P.S. I even calculated it for you and attached it as pics.

He makes its sound like you will pay tax and reg twice. There is no 10% penalty for registering an out of state car. You will pay the sales tax and registration for your county in Ca wether you buy from Clint or a local dealer. You will not pay tax to Co and then again in Ca. If you buy locally, the dealer handles the process. If you go with Clint you have to handle it. My final price including everything (car, tax, registration, shipping, doc fees to the Co dealer, smog check fee, etc) about $29800. This was for a Limited with options (MSRP $28978/sale price $26043 including $500 in options that I could have done without, but were on the car). The less optioned cars save you money and they were throwing in the doc fees to save another $389.

Damn. Thanks a bunch man, I knew something was up when he said he can definitely get me a better price than clint.

I will definitely be using this in negotiation with him, but more than likely gonna go through clint or another fellow member I've been talking to. I was just inquiring locally to see if I could get the car around the same pri a without waiting for delivery or registration issues.

Btw I also showed him a Internet price another member posted for a Brz near sacramento that was a little over 26k.... And no reply. Lol

Did you guys put a deposit by phone/email/fb with heuberger? I'm kind of skeptical about that.

CC info by phone. 3 months later, and they still applied the deposit to the final price of the car

Yes (phone). Used a cc because you have more protection that way. There are so many of us that have bought from them, that you don't have to worry about it being a scam.

I retitled the car two days ago at AAA office. I also asked about out of state.
  • Title fee is $15
  • AAA office, if following proper procedure, cannot title a NEW car. Some offices have titled a "new" out of state car that was already registered in the state it was purchased. Some dealers do this, but if you have the Certificate of Origin you should not be allowed to title/register at a AAA office.

I am wondering for those of you who had the car delivered, did you have to put a certain number of miles on the car before doing the smog check to make sure you can pass ECU DTC readiness? Based on my understanding, if you bring a car with ~5 mi for smog check you WILL fail ECU DTC readiness test hence fail the smog check.

I checked with a scanner at about 95 miles and had no pending readiness codes. Did the smog test a couple of days later with no problems.

How? Why?

If you fail a smog check after bringing a car in, it will be a warranty matter with the manufacturer. This is pretty much a slam dunk case for you.

We're buying new cars, not some used car with unknown history. A new car may be exempt from smog checks, but it must meet all applicable smog laws. The lemon law may still apply, but the car won't fail smog just because it has no miles on the odometer.

At least in California, if you attempt to do a smog check on a car that just had it's ECU reset (a brand new car from the factory is the equivalent of this), you will not be able to pass the Engine ECU DTC readiness test until you complete a drive cycle (by driving ~100 miles but varies between cars) and all ECU readiness monitors are listed as complete with an OBDII scanner.
