Why are most stock wheels weak stance?

Why is this? Even when the design is nice the offset usually is weak.

It's a "safe" play by the automaker to mass produce and pump out product

That didn't give any insight to my question. What is "safe" about a sunk in the fender wheel? Is there any/much price difference to lower the offset of a wheel to dramatically improve a cars appearance.

I meant safe as in "playing it safe" with design/fitment for the car ..not a "safety" stand point which I am sure they play w/ a TON of different wheel fits to get the right balance (watch the Cadillac ATS testing videos)

Also, more money for aftermarket too. Imagine what would happen to companies that made lowering springs/coilovers if companies released the car already low.

The reason is production costs as well as what is optimal for peformance. The wider the wheel, the more rubber you'll need. That's why you don't usually see 3 piece wheels as OEM. Also staggered, they'll have to produce 2 different widths as oppose to 4 of the same width.

Some members were already bitching if this car was 25K plus. 1 of the goals was to make this car cheap and 17x7's all the way around is a good way to keep the cost down for a wheel/tire package. They already offer the fenders rolled too. TBH, I'd rather see it come with oem steel wheels and hubcaps.

Low offsets mean higher forces acting on the wheel bearings and spindles. This doesn't make too much difference in the aftermarket because the OEMs usually build in a certain factor of safety to reduce the statistical probability of a premature failure (to avoid warranty issues). But for OEMs, low offsets would mean using larger, more expensive components. Further, using a high offset moves the outboard suspension pickups further outboard which allows the OEMs to either improve the suspension geometry or increase interior space by moving the inboard pickups further outboard as well.

As for why cars aren't "stanced" from the factory, OEM's actually understand that suspension travel is a good thing.

Because only a small group of special people think that actually looks good.

It'd be really awesome to get this as an option. Instead of +$xxxx we would see -$xxxx amount of money on final MSRP. Use that extra money for some real wheels w/ performance tires.

Unless I misread it or this is specific to the GReddy FR-S.

http://speedhunters.com/archive/2011...-greddy-b.aspx

We spent a fair bit of time on our hands and knees looking up the FR-S' skirt. Now, Toyota and Scion have stated that they built the 86/FR-S with the enthusiast in mind, and on first impressions they weren't lying. I'm sure many of us will appreciate the lip of the rear fender, which is folded back.

some people at the event said only the greddy had rolled fenders and the red one didn't, while others have said the red one did also have rolled fenders. no way to tell unless you saw it for yourself.
