I bought the STI Group N mounts as per the links above. I think there is a difference between 'normal' STI and Group N STI. I moved from the OEM mounts to the Group N the change was pretty dramatic, the sloppy take up when changing gear has been banished..

UPDATE: okay after a long drive, I can confidently say the crazy knocking sound is caused by the rough cold idle. Once the engine is hot, there are no crazy noises, even at idle. The only problem so far is a nasty gurgling rasp that is noticeable on acceleration, especially from 3K rpm onwards, but that may be due to the trans support, as it seems to come from directly below the trans tunnel. I put my back seats up and that helped the noise and I have to say, noises aside, the effect is very nice.
All those noises that we get new threads on from new owners once in a while with the title "does this sound normal?" are now amplified so the car sounds very much like a racecar. There is a bit of shudder on takeoff, but once warmed up, there is only a small increase in silent vibration felt at the pedals. Go for them if on the fence, just keep in mind they're not as quiet as some reviews made them out to be. Then again, these are the new updated mounts so who knows if the change made them stiffer. Also, my combination of mods could be exacerbating the effects. As for why the racket is so unbearable when the engine is cold, I've read on this website posts from other users saying that the engine runs rich when cold, which could be contributing to the rough idle, causing all kinds of clattery when the mounts are introduced. Whether a tune and/or Fluidampr might mitigate this are both options I'm willing to explore. Thanks for the replies!

I think a fluidamper would be good help. Even if you're going FI later it was be a nice upgrade as well.

That is the plan, which the new mounts are a part of!

What's different between the old and new Perrin mounts? I have the original ones and other than idle being rougher, once the rev's climb everything is better and the car actually rides smoother over impacts. I went ahead and made heat shields for mine from header wrap and aluminum tape when I installed them and they have been holding up very well over the years.

Visited the Perrin site and saw the difference... new ones are nicer, better done with a split through bushing design and all Perrin designed parts versus Perrin base for an Energy Suspension or whomever mount. Cheaper too!

Been out of my car for years, dissassembled and sitting in a box in my closet... sheared the rod pin off the linkage rod because of improper tolerance. Had planned to custom redo the OME linkage with proper toleranced rod filled and bushing'd to the shifter lever but never got around to it...the sheared pin is still stuck in the shift lever as well. If you don't mind DIY to get it working I'd let you have it for 1/4 of its original price. Also have my modded original center console that would fit it so you don't have to hack up the stock one.

For those with Perrin engine mounts, did your exhaust develop a nasty rattle? It's super embarrassing, especially in closed spaces like indoor parking lots, people are looking at my car like wtf, something's about to go terribly wrong with that. Is this an exhaust hanger issue, i.e. something that can be mitigated, or does every car with stiffer engine mounts suffer from this? If you've ever heard something metallic roll down the road, like a hub cap or a freakin cooking pot lid, that's what it sounds like.
