it's a common issue-- you didn't know you were doing it wrong, so you performed the task with the belief that your method were correct and the issue was with faulty equipment being used. it's one of the things that i work to teach new hires. if it doesn't work the first time, stop and analyze both the methods as well as the equipment. most of the time, it is an equipment issue, but occasionally, it's user misapplication of the equipment.

The secretary got splattered a bit with battery acid so I took her home to get her clothes off and take a shower. The next morning I took her to pick up a new battery and installed it for her. Noooooo - I went home that night - |

newer cars are a little trickier now with their rear-mounted batteries. they just make power lugs available up front, sometimes with labeled plastic caps that no longer exist

I've never done it either, and every time I have ever jumped a car, I put all four clamps directly to both batteries. |

Yep, the older MGBs had two 6V batteries located on either side of the car under the back jump seat, under a screwed down panel and they were wired in series. Talk about a pain to jump, after you tore the jumper cables apart on one end so they would reach -

I was paying attention too but it was dark and I was a panicked 17 year old trying to get the car started fast so I could get out of there before her dad got home, he was a Sargent, he had guns! Instead we ended up with two non starting cars in his driveway. We pushed both cars into the parking lot across the street. I lived to tell the tale. Take that you pompous bastard!
