EJ25 possible rod knock

A bit off topic from FR-S or brz.... a friend recently purchased a 2013 wrx with roughly 27k miles. Drove the car casually, occasionally boosting with a few races, no hard launches or sliding either. Has yet to put 3k miles on it when he noticed a knocking from the engine. From my amateur ear it definitely sounds like rod knock. What would cause something like this? Any helpful feedback would be greatly appreciated

Friend of mine bought a 2014 WRX STi. Didn't beat on it or anything, but still got rod knock at 1,100 miles. Dealership replaced the engine.

Sometimes it just happens. Sucks!

Can't confirm that's it's a rod knock without hearing it but a 2013 with 27k is still under power train warranty so hurry back to the dealer and get it fix! Turbo EJs are know for ring land cracking, however that doesn't usually cause a "knock".

My FA20 makes a lot of knock noise. No idea what it is and it has knocking for 40,000km's so I am not worried at this point. I wrote it off as a boxer thing? I think its the roller rockers TBH

That's just typical "subie tick" as me and my friends call. This isn't a tick, is definitely a knocking from the under size of the motor

He isn't having ring issues, but that is a huge help for him when he decides to build the engine. Thank you for the link

That era of engines aren't known for being the most reliable, but on the flip side Subaru has been pretty good about fixing them under warranty provided you're not stupid about it.
