Window making a loud "crack" noise - any ideas?

Problem just started recently. When my I lower my passenger window from a fully closed position, it makes a loud "crack" noise. This ONLY happens when it is hot. So in the morning and evening it's fine. But if I open the window when I get off work and the car is hot, the window will make the loud crack noise. Driver side is fine. I can't see the window catching on anything, although a small section of the rubber appears to be wearing, but shouldn't be making that noise. Any thoughts? I'm taking it to my mechanic for a regular service in a couple weeks, but I'm not sure if I can duplicate the problem if it's cool that day, and want to make sure I'm not damaging any thing.

edit: I did have the frozen power window fix done last year if that makes a difference

Thanks, I'll give that a try. From what I've googled, silicone lube is the best choice?

Yes silicone lube works well just use a very small amount though and refresh every month or so by wiping it down well and putting fresh on.

Just started happening for me the other day too. Keep me posted, and I'll do the same.

Well I brought it to my mechanic for regular service. He couldn't find anything wrong and suggested using silicone lubricant for the seals, so he lubed it up and it's still making the noise...I applied a second coat of lube myself when I got home and still the same...any other suggestions? It's a pretty loud cracking noise when it's really hot...

can you get someone else to operate the window so that you can try to pinpoint the source of the noise? you might need to use a mechanics stethoscope. One of my mechanic friends says this stuff is good, but it's kind of expensive.

I glossed over this the first time around because I didn't want to get in an argument over the lube issue.

There are fore and aft hard stops the window lands on at the top. When one of them slips out of adjustment, the regulator binds up. That's the loud "clack" you hear. It's a bitch to get it aligned just right. I considered writing a DIY until I realized it's like trying to explain how to hang a door in 5 easy steps. It's more art than process. I'd offer to help but I live in the wrong Vancouver.

Come up to my pad one of these days and I'll help you fix yours. I can't talk anyone through it. Way too much detail and finesse involved.

How about you come down to my pad? We can have a clutch/window day, and anything you want done! I have a lift now *nudge*nudge

...Mine hasn't been as bad since it started cooling off, but definitely isn't just a seal lube problem. I figured it must be the way it seated or tracked.

my drivers door makes this noise. passenger is fine. mentioned to service dept at the dealer when getting oil change. they claimed to not find any difference between the two so they were of no help. ill look into the silicone grease though, hopefully alleviate the issue

There are a couple of different sources for this noise.
One is what Ultra is talking about and like he said it is a bitch to get just right. I made my dealer do it under warranty and it took them hours but they got it. (I also got the TSBs done as a bonus)

The other is the glass sticking to the rubber seal and then giving a load "pop" or "snap" noise when you bring it down. I had this as well and at first just used silicone to correct it. I noticed it again really bad a few days after I did a full wax on my car. It would be far worse when it was hot during the day and tapper off as it got cooler. This made me curious so instead of just slapping more silicone on I played around a bit and realized that when I waxed the car I got some on the window seals (it is a polymer wax and OK on plastic and rubber). What was happening was that when it was hot and the wax softened just a bit the glass would stick to it and give quite a pop when rolled down. Cleaned the seals and glass edges up with some alcohol (for both me and the car) and the problem went right away.
