Cracked windshield

Finally I was welcomed to the world of cracked windshield last week. Safelite gave a quote for 580 dollars. Does anyone have experience with this windshield? Is it better or worse than the OEM option? or it doesnt matter which windshield it is as this is a ground hugging car?

In the same boat, I just had safelite order a factory windshield from toyota... my insurance covers it for free, but safelite told me the windshield even from toyota was only 500ish

$500!!!

I don't think so that sounds outrageous. I replaced the windshield in my Tacoma at a local auto glass repair shop for $150. Glass is perfect and work quality was great. You would not know it had been replaced if I did not tell you.

New(ish) car, low volume, glass will be expensive. Can't compare it to the Tacoma at this point. You can call around and see if there are options. If not, you may be SOL.

Make sure safelite orders the rubber strip that goes around the windshield as well, or else they will try to use some crappy universal stuff that looks horrible.

I had to instruct the guy to pull the stuff off my old windshield (less than 1000 miles on it so it came off fine) and re-install on the new windshield with a high-bond 3m doublesided tape (which I had to supply as he had no such tape).

They showed me the universal stuff they used and its CRAP. They would have to cut it in several places to make it go around the windshield properly, and would have looked like a hack job.

I just experienced a cracked windshield due to a rock hitting my windshield while on the highway Friday. This sucks!

My windshield got chipped in two placed at once, huge rock got flung up off the road at highway speeds. Serious pitting but no cracks.

Safelite installed a non-toyota windshield on my car. They have OEM equivalents, at least my local safelite dealer did

It may be made by the same manufacturer as the OEM glass, when I had my TT windshield replaced by safelight that was the case.

I got my cracked windshield replaced (with an OEM one) less than 3 weeks ago. Today, I got ANOTHER rock chip driving on the SAME highway. It's only a small chip, but that's how my first windshield was at first. It grew into a large crack by the end of the day.

Paid $500 deductible for the first $650 OEM windshield. I hope the new chip doesn't grow into a crack, but I just paid the $80 premium for annual full glass coverage; something I should've done since the beginning.

Looks like time to find an alternate route.
