Not familiar with the automatic but with the few I've driven I would guess it would just ignore you and use a more reasonable gear. It'll probably let you in 6th at 25mph, probably not any slower.

I filled up yesterday, my worst tank at 29.7mpg

Going up a hill at 30 MPH in 5th isnt giving you way worse gas mileage than going up that hill in 3rd or 4th at 30? I'm not sure about that. Yea, anytime I'm at 60+ I'm putting it into 6th for sure.

I need to do a lot more driving before I can really figure out the gearing and whats best MPG wise. I've only put 500 miles on it so far.

Well, I'm probably at 15% throttle and losing speed. Once it starts bog I'll downshift. The hills aren't steep and aren't very long. I live in Iowa :P If you aren't trying to accelerate fast you can be in a higher gear than most people would even consider.

Try droppping it into one gear higher and between 1.5k and 2k, I'm seeing 30-40+ mpg on the instant display when I do that over the past month or so.

But your right, it's "happiest" and seems to run best above 2k.

I got 32 on my last fill up. I changed my speed on my morning commute from 75mph to 70-71mph. The afternoon is still stop and go until I find a better route.

With the 86 in manual mode, you have full control. Only thing it won't do is let you over-rev or stall the engine (around 800RPM it will drop the gear down).

If you have it in D you can shift it, but it will, after a short time, switch back to what it thinks is best.

Im averaging 28-30 mpg. And this is city driving but i guess driving on PCH helps will the long straights majority of the time. But i do keep the car in 5th gear and go into 6th when i past 60mph or above 3500rpm.

See below, That is combined and imagine Philadelphia traffic. I do get about 33mpg when cruising on highways with the AC on.

4500 miles, 1 year old now. Averaging 29 mpg calculated consistently on 91 octane, and original tires. BRZ Limited 6MT. I wring it out to 4-5k rpm for most low gear shifts, cruise in 5th gear at 45-55mph, then 6th gear for 55+. I take it up to 6-7k rpm now and then.

Not much highway miles, but my commute is a 55mph single lane road with lights - so if I make the lights, it's a straight 6th gear, low rpm cruise. But that's 50% of my driving - and my commute home has a lot of stop & go traffic. The rest of my driving is in town.

My WRX (stage 2) has dipped into the 16-17mpg range doing similar driving.

I have an automatic and play with the paddle shifting whenever I'm not in traffic. Take corners like a crazy person. Accelerate like every light is a race. And use my car mostly for commuting.

I'm getting avg 27.2 mpg

My normal driving gets me 27 MPG on a 6 speed MT. If I have my dash display showing the Avg. MPG I tend to be more cautious about my driving and will stick around 31 MPG.

@shiumai, Being you and I probably cover similar distance in a typical day, I'm glad to hear somebody else is getting MPG on the lower end of the EPA estimate like I am.

I have a premium MT. And after 3500 miles I'm averaging 32 mpg. A lot of that is the road trip but its always 30+ even around town. I don't drive very hard (often) and have a drop in k&n filter and invidia q300 catback
