Help|Best Android based HU

I've been looking at the TUN21A Capacitive Head unit and the Parrot Asteroid Smart HU.

What I am looking for is the ability to run Torque APP and at the same time use my phone's WIFI hotspot to connect the HU to the internet. Being able to use Google Maps as my Navigation and stream Pandora and possibly Netflix.

The ability to use the headunit while driving is preferred as I want to be able to use my navigation on the go.

Being able to customize the launcher would be great but if it requires ROOT I don't mind either. Are there any updates for the firmware like 4.0 or 4.1?

And for those who have these headunit, how's the pre out voltage and the EQs included in it?

You can do all of that on the Parrot Asteroid Smart, but it of course has pro's and con's. It's not the fastest unit in the world, or the highest resolution screen. I don't know what the competition is like.

If you are looking at the TUN21A go instead for the T7019A. If fits the Frs/86 perfectly and is plug and play. But, needs rooting and a Bluetooth dongle (as does the TUN21A but it also needs a wiring harness and dash kit - the T7019A doesn't.

I have it working great for me as per the huge android head unit thread!

Fitment here http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...&postcount=449

Running carscope (like torque but I prefer it) here http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...&postcount=512

T7019A came with green LEDs. Change to red LEDs was done on my head unit by a mate and he put up the DIY here http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42023

Thanks to @GreenPants on the android thread my unit now starts up with a TRD symbol and then a Toyota logo with a spinning orange 86 and has the 86 piston logo as the wallpaper. Small things but make it perfect.

Runs Sygic maps and music will play at the same time.

Perfect for me but takes time to root and set it up right so not for anyone that doesn't want to play around. I didn't know anything about them until reading @2forme's thread. Well worth a read if you have a couple of hours to read through it all. I learned heaps.

Off topic @ft_sjo but you need to make you signature banner narrower as it ends up squishing any thread you comment on when viewed on a tablet as your comment ends up taking the width of the screen and the other comments become much narrower. At least thats what it does on an ipad without tapatalk.

Needs to stop at the 11th unicorn - the one with the yellow/red hair. Be excellent if you could make that wee change.

*sigh*, no, it won't.

I had a nexus 7 and tried that route. Not only is the sound quality crap, but running a full touch device without the interface to support it kinda sucks. How do you safely and easily change the volume? Listen to FM radio? Listen to an iPod? How about changing tracks while using navigation? Automatically turn the unit on and off with the car ignition?

Sure, you can say you have Android 4.3 in the car, but it [the tablet] wasn't built for that purpose and doesn't serve it very well. I'd rather have my eyes on the road, than fiddling with a tablet trying to get it to do what I want.

Why would you listen to an ipod when you have the tablet?
I have mine set up to turn the screen on when it receives power and turn it off when power is lost using tasker.
I'm using multi-touch gestures to change tracks (2 finger swipe front or back, same with volume) which does not require looking at the screen.
I don't care for any of the FM stations where I live, so that was a non issue for me. But he mentioned he would be tethering it to his phone, so using an app like TuneIn radio would solve that issue.

Because tablets don't have 100+GB of storage. I carry my entire music collection on an iPod, and just take it from car to car.

Because I don't want to use cell phone data for listening to the radio. Lose cell reception, lose radio.

How do you turn up the volume? How do you switch to Navi with one button? or is that a gesture? How fast is the bluetooth refresh on the 7? I know mine lagged quite a bit behind the head unit (w/ aftermarket BT dongle) .

You *can* make it work, somewhat, but it won't give you all the functions of a car radio in a nice streamlined package... and certainly not without sacrifice. Many people would rather just swap in a head unit that is ready to go, looks decent, and is already made for in car use.

I'm interested to see what happens with the Kenwood DNN990HD. Apparently it's running Android 4.0.4 natively but no ones been able to figure out how to root it just yet. If they can pull that off ill buy it the next day.

I just got the Parrot Asteroid Smart about 2 months ago, I like it a lot, however i have not been able to install any apps from the parrot marketplace because my phone doesn't have hotspot and i can't park my car in my house lol (mom takes the garage). The Navi that it comes with pre-installed works really well and i like it well enough that i haven't felt the need to really look around and try to find other Navi apps. I have unlimited data on my phone, so most of the time i'm streaming music from my phone to the HU via bluetooth and it still has really good quality, you can also change songs and pause the music on the phone through the HU so you don't really need to pick up the phone while driving unless changing playlists/artists. It does have an Equalizer that you can customize and adjust to your preferred settings to. It also runs my USB's really well for the times i don't have a good data signal on my phone. I'm really happy with the HU and have not had any issues with it other than a minor bug IMO this morning where it decided it didn't want to turn bluetooth on or read my USB's, had to do a factory reset to get it to work which was pretty easy to do and find i think it took about 2 min to reset.

@nzer @2forme

I have my eyes set on TUN21A as Aesthetically wise, I like it more than the T7019A.

Pretty much the difference is the wiring harness and the dash kit right? Also would the files from the Chinese Ca-Fi Knockoff thread works still in terms of rooting?
