To be fair though, OP had a legitimate concern about the engine and I had that same concern before I did some searches for high-mileage twins.

My guess is that this is the first time in recorded history that a sentence such as that had the words "pretty good" attached to it.

That was some legit schooling! Forced me to actually study. I stayed an extra half hour at work fumbling through wikipedia links.

Haha no worries, had to poke a little fun after this thread's relevancy started to expire and go off in various tangents. If we all knew when motors are supposed to die, it would be almost as much a spoiler as when we are supposed to....

When people say the engine should be fine as long as you dont ABUSE it, what does that mean????

I do the proper maintenance on my 2015 brz, add good quality oil and do regular changes and have not have any problems after a year and a half... I trash the shxt out of this car, meaning that, every opportunity i have i like to shift gears at high RPMs (not red line it too much tough)

Abuse: use (something) to bad effect or for a bad purpose; misuse.
"the judge abused his power by imposing the fines"
synonyms: misuse, misapply, misemploy.

There's the definition. It's up to you to define abuse. I would say excessive launch, burnout, mis-shifting, modification that would affect engine performance negatively, no maintenance, over heating, etc.

Trying to think more, but that's all i got for now. Have fun with the car and keep doing good maintenance and you'll be fine.

I let my oldest daughter learn to drive my past FRS. She had never driven a manual before.

I would call that abuse.

Proper maintenance, don't mod beyond the internals abilities (can be a fine line), and above all DO NOT OVER REV. You read loads of engine failure horror stories here but when you start to look closely you will see that in most (there are exceptions) cases there are clues as to what may have gone wrong. Most engines with issues have been modded, had guys new to working on cars doing their own service or had people new to MTs where the risk of accidental, miss shift, over rev is greatly escalated. I have watched the blown engine threads very closely and even though many deny they ever screwed up there are certain indicators they did. Now before everybody gets pissy with me I repeat, not all the reports have such indicators attached just many of them.
Add this to the fact that we hear about and focus on the issues here which blows the whole thing out of proportion to reality and it is easy to get the perception there is a big problem when in fact there is not. I doubt the overall engines failure for these cars has exceeded 2% but of course am not privy to the numbers to prove that.
Take care of the engine and it will last a long time.

hell i launch this car any chance i get ,..keep the rpms up high in low gear, red line pretty much every gear possible even when the car is cold, bounce it off the rev limiter, downshift through all the gears every time i approach a red light even to first gear just for kicks and giggles to hear the sound

but all routine maintenance is performed on my car...don't feel sorry for the next guy that buys this car used.... you know the saying: not driving your car hard is like not sexing your girlfriend so she will be more appealing for the next guy

I recently taught my 13 year old grandaughter to drive my 6spdM FRS.

No children, grandparents, or cars were harmed.

Billwot,

That's a nice picture of a happy grand daughter. Kudos to you for showing her how to drive a manual.

My daughter tried it a few times and decided that she wanted an automatic.
