FT-86 SpeedFactory LCA by Verus - Lightest LCA for the Twins - Development Thread
We have been working on several projects with Velox and will be unveiling them over the next few weeks. First up we have a new LCA that is in development and soon undergoing testing on a couple time attack cars.
There are a lot of options out there when it comes to Lower Control Arms for the twins. You have simple units like the SPC arms all the way up to full CNC Aluminum ones as we'll see below. The factory lower control arm as I am sure you all know lacks any sort of camber adjustment. This does not work very well for those of us who decide to lower the vehicle or do any sort of motorsports with the car. Working with Velox it was decided to completely redesign the LCA to reduce the most amount of unsprung weight possible, give racers a lightweight and durable solution. To get started we got 3D models of the OEM unit. So how can this be improved upon? 1. Weight: Lighter than the OEM and other aftermarket units. This helped us determine which material to use. 2. Packaging: We wanted our LCA to retain OEM mounting points. This allows the LCA to be used on a stock suspension set-up , as well as coilovers, and not lower the rear of the vehicle like other units geared more towards stance. This is what ruled out the above design. 3. Manufacturing: We decided early on that we wanted a machined component. With a cut, bent, and welded steel unit, tolerances are looser and heavily dependent on the shop doing the work. On the other hand, a modern CNC machine can hit tolerances tighter than 0.005″ without breaking a sweat. 4. Strength: We knew we wanted a LCA that was ready to hit the track. From daily drivers, to enthusiasts, to all out time attack cars, this LCA had to be handle the punishment. Several ideas were constructed but weight was still a tad high. A finial design was settled upon once more weight savings was created. Everything has been created via 3D models from OEM supplied 3D data. It doesn't get any more precise then this guys. The stock LCA overlaid on ours. Stay tuned as we test tension, deflection, and overall strength. |

Toe is controlled by a completely different arm. SPC provides a bushing you have to have pressed out of the factory toe arm and then press in their bushing in order to get toe adjustment. SPC is also stamped steal arm that uses a bolt for camber adjustment that can slip under heavy load.
Factory toe adjustment we have found to be plenty for our racing applications. |

They are designed to be adjusted on car. If significant adjustment is needed, it will be suggested to thread the adjuster out and thread the rod end in. This is to ensure that the threads won't get stripped out. The instructions will have further information on this subject.
Not currently, but something we can definitely discuss. |

The materials is roughly 25% stronger then 6061-T6 but weaker then 7075. 7075 would put us out of price range for most customers. We have thought about running a few sets from 7075 for the time attack guys pushing 2+ G in turns, just as an added safety margin.
Currently, it will not. Another thing we can discuss before the production run. Last edited by eric6; 02-16-2015 at 10:35 AM. |
