I had the same dilemma and decided to buy new. All the extra improvements they made to the 2017 were worth it to me as well as knowing that no one had farted on my seat before I did.

Life is too short - if it's your "dream car", then you've already made up your mind.

There are deals on used 2017s out there. Tomorrow I'm picking up a series.yellow with only 2K miles on it. (The first owner decided to trade it in on a Lotus.)

He has clear film on the nose, tinted windows (50% on sides, 30% on rear), car cover, a pre-paid maintenance plan, and something called Auto Butler which applies a sealant twice a year for the next 3 years. Not sure if that's any value, but I do like the maintenance plan. He hasn't tracked the car and claims he carefully broke the car in. This car looks and smells new. It would save me roughly $5500 to buy this car (including tax and fees).
Wow, both sound like great deals. Is the CA market really that saturated with BRZs?! Here in NC there are next to no used BRZs for sale, period. And forget about dealer pricing under MSRP, nevermind invoice.

I was in the same boat as you and as i have still not gotten my car yet i made my decision. I decided to go for a new 17 brz with pp, because i know i would regret the decision if i buy a later model used.

Just like some user said above, if something annoys you in the used older model you will begin to regret your decision.

The only other thing i would even consider is a used 2017 no less. Get the latest model

California is a pretty large market, so there is a fair amount of used BRZ's available. I would estimate in both Northern California and Southern California there's about 20-30 cars or so that I've seen for sale online right now, and about roughly twice that amount for used FRS's.

If the going gets rough, it's definitely worth traveling out of state to get what you want. I've entertained the thought of traveling the 400 miles to pick up a car in the other end of the state, mainly because I'm used to traveling back and forth between SF and LA.

Almost all the used BRZ's have crazy asking prices that are several thousand higher than what they should sell for. 2015 and 2016 models usually have prices comparable to new. Dealers are heavily discounting new which should definitely put the pressure on used cars, but sellers haven't gotten the memo. This is why I had resigned myself to just buying new. Every now and then, a nice car at a realistic asking price comes up, but it's rare.

Oh, and half the BRZ/FR-S for sale (at least on CL) have salvaged titles!

This is so true.

Test drive all the cars you are considering. I sometimes still longingly look at the new STi wondering, "what if I had gone for one of those?" Part of that was I didn't know how to drive a manual before I got this car and part of it was I was too antsy to get a new car (this was my first new car). I should have gone home and slept on it.

Regardless, buy what you want. It looks like you'll keep it stock and won't track the car. In that case, why not get a new one that you know the history of? Sure, the previous owner of the 2016 might have detailed history but there's still things they may have forgotten or "forgotten" to tell you.

True that, but I wasn't even doing a local only search. I did a 250 mile radius search for used BRZ's for $25,000 or less (w/manual transmission only) and got ZERO search results.

I mean, geez...

LOL
The guys looking to buy are complaining about how much they cost and cheap ones are hard to find.
The guys trying to sell are complaining about how bad the depreciation is and that they can't get top retail dollar for them.

This is the way of the world. On the other hand, when you have '14 Limiteds with 35K+ miles and $21K asking prices, it doesn't seem worth bothering as you'd have to get the seller to drop the price by at least $3K and more like $4K.

There definitely is a disconnect between actual market value and what sellers think they can get. It's a niche car with limited buyers. Dealers seem to understand that in this area.

It looks like most of the replies are reinforcing my thoughts about buying new. That will most likely what I end up doing. But, damn, that 2016 sure is purdy!
