Maybe Subaru & Toyota are working with gotitRex out of Australia to give it a crazy redline.

My validity on the following comment holds as much value as a fart in the wind.
I heard Toyota is bringing back the Celica and MR2.

No, they're renaming the 86 the Celica like it should have been initially.

But then they would have missed out on that huge crowd that knew what an AE86 was.
OH and that massive Initial D crowd.

Well, you can get a new 4wd Camry next year.
If they get around to packing in the Yaris drivetrain, wouldn't take all that much. Right?
LOL

Can't tell if sarcastic or not. While the Celica nameplate was obviously around longer than the AE86 generation of Corolla's, the AE86 is far and away more popular and well known than any of the best Celica's. I highly doubt the Celica's long lasting nameplate would've mattered to the masses in regards to sales from name recognition.

The car's (ZN6) birth really did sprout from how surprised Toyota was at the lasting popularity of an, at the time, 20 year old econo chassis. They reached out to the AE86 communities, including Club4AG, to see what they liked, and would like changed, etc. It is in this spirit the car was developed.

Of course, it is by no means a direct successor to the AE86. It wouldn't be one to the Celica either, for that matter.

Complete sarcasm. The general public has at least heard the name Celica. There is a very small sub group of a specific car fans that have ever heard the term AE86. If the AE86 had not been featured in an anime that sub group would be even smaller.

This was very true 20 years ago. I'd say for at least the past decade, you weren't really "in the scene" of imports if you didn't at least know what an AE86 was. The recognition was spurred by a combination of Drifting becoming a main stream import sport, and Initial D being released stateside. I'd say the AE86's popularity was dependent on both factors.

One of the biggest boons to its popularity was the fact that the first D1 held in the U.S., an exhibition, was won by Ueo Katsuhiro, easily the most well known AE86 D1 driver, probably ever. That car was front cover and center on basically all the tuner mags afterwards.

Edit: I FIRMLY believe, that if Initial D was the only coverage the AE86 ever received, and it was never a staple car of Drifting, it would be less known than if the situation was reversed.
Again drifting and even tuner mags are a very small segment of the driving public. Probably one of the smallest in the USA.
Now if the AE86 was in NASCAR then damn everybody would know what it is.
