Was thinking about this alot.

I like to have a Tiny trailer to hold a set of track wheels/tires and tools (big enough to hold 8 wheels/tires, and perhaps a motorcycle as this same trailer will be used for motorcycle track days too even if FRS won't be towing it on those days).

Was wondering if anybody would think this car could make it.

Yes I know we dont' know about this vehicles towing capacity.

But i was curious if there are examples of low power/sports cars that tow their own trailers ...rather than use a truck/suv.

Some time ago I asked a somewhat similar question and one forum member pointed me this page of towing a small trailer for tires and track gears.

So even if by spec Miata was not suppose to tow anything, there are people who are doing that. They probably did it with class 1 or less trailer hitch.

I think this was embedded in the great debate of trunk or hatch.

Thanks for the info.
It just doesn't make sense to buy a whole other TRUCK/SUV which I'll have to pay insurance/gas on only to be used for towing.

I found this picture...its a good size trailer...for a bike and I can see myself strapping on tires on it for the FRS.
Still searching for something smaller than that trailer though in the picture.

s14 spec similar to frs?

its not just a power game. you need to spring strength or travel to bear the load. a spec miata might be able go get a little more than a stock miata because the springrate is 4x higher and not designed to ride on the bumpstops under normal conditions

Trailer hitch would be handy...
I would only use a trailer, Twice or 3 times a year if that?
I dont want another vehicle just for a trailer hitch.

You probably wouldn't be able to tow more than 500-750 pounds including the trailer. Then there's mounting it, and clearance issues.

I did see a 370Z with a damn hitch molded into the middle of the bumper. Very odd.

A hitch will be made I'm sure and I'll install one just like on my other cars for hauling tires, mountain bikes, etc

The Standard tow ratings that I see for cars is 1000lbs max.

One of the reason I want to buy this car is because I can put the race tires in the back and I don't need a trailer. Otherwise I'll just get a Miata for track.

I think 1000lb towing is good enough for 8 rims+ tires

Probably going to be 17lb rims x8 = 138lbs

138lbs + (weight of 8 tires) + plus the trailer hitch= ?

When I want to tow the motorcycle and tires, I'll be using the Subaru instead.

Now...to find a trailer that meets that need...

I only found trailex.com
I'm looking at the Utility Trailers.

We get them straight from toyota (genuine) here for our small cars like Corolla and Rukus (scion dB?), so FT86 should be no different.

The Impreza/Legacy platform is great for towing, so if the FRS is in fact based on that platform then towing some tires or a bike should be fine. It will be the weight of the trailer that you'll have to watch out for. If you plan on towing often, you might want to install a temp gauge for your transmission oil, or a full oil cooler system. And you can usually tow more weight if your trailer has built in brakes.

Also, I LOVE that Forrester towing the 86.

While that might look cool...the Forester towing an AE86 is really cutting it close for being not-so-smart...2400lb towing capacity; 1800lb car + 1200lb trailer.

That said, towing a small trailer with tires and wheels on it will be no problem for the FR-S.
