Others use it to bolster their e-peens and argue that they're superior because they have more points. Some do it for completion's sake. But I think they'll probably be everywhere going forward. MMOs especially, since that gives even more drive to play the neverending game.
I saw it as motivation. I certainly wouldn't have spent hours and hours clearing CoD 2 and CoD4 on Veteran difficulty if not for achievements. Those are two games I can proudly say I have 1000GS on. I probably spent 2 hours alone just on Mile High Club. It's a huge motivational factor to play through a game multiple times, play on harder difficulties, complete more side tasks, play as other classes, and otherwise just get more out of a game than I would have gotten normally. In the PS2 days, I would rarely finish games, much less play them to 100% completion. Since games these days come out of my own pockets instead of my parents, I like getting more value out of each of my games.

It was incredibly frustrating when Sony first stole the idea because of how poorly it was implemented into games that were already out. Most of the games supported were done so poorly that there was no point at all. Uncharted, for example, required you start a completely new save file if you wanted your achi-- er trophies. Something I learned 10 hours into the game. Combine that with the fact that most of the games I owned at the time were older and didn't even support trophies at all, the feature became even MORE irrelevant to me. Should have had it from the get-go like 360 did at launch in 2005. Not a year AFTER their own launch in 2007.

That said, I think the current bronze/silver/gold trophy system is better than 360's arbitrary point system. But of course, it's because they looked at 360's achievement system for two years before copying it and making it better. :P Regardless, the updated achievement system in the X1 looks fantastic.

I'll be getting both. An Xbox One first for Forza 5, and a PlayStation 4 whenever it gets an exclusive I actually want, which hopefully won't take long...

It was free on PS3, but the quality of service wasn't as good. I could play the same person in the same game on each console, but there would always be less significantly lag on XBL versus PSN. I'm really hoping that PS4's charging for online multiplayer will bring its service up to par.

Well, so much for that.

Still on the fence. Likely stick with Sony. I'm really waiting for a must have title to be announced. So far everything I really want seems to be TBA or is 2014 or later. (Such as FF13Verse/15, Kingdom Hearts 3, Metal Gear 5.) I really want a next gen racer (wish GT6 would be for ps4 and not 3) the current games don't feel like they are geared towards me as I'm not a social gamer.

This is from the guy that posts all cryptic so he can't be picked up in searches, nor will media quote him. But he seems to have connections in the industry and turns out to be right.

I'll attempt a translation:

Greetings from the land of beer, bratwurst and weird porn. Got here a little while ago and am tired so dropping this stuff early, then bed. Afterwards I'll visit some churches, some friends are in the park as well. Then some work meetings and will see how the Gamescon floor is later this week.

Truthfact 1:
No live stream for real reasons. Xbox One architecture is still not fully complete. The latest version of the SDK from a couple of weeks ago dropped preformance by 15 - 20% across the board. Now before you get mad at me X-Bots, this happens all the time in console development and it will eventually be fixed but there's no chance for an early October release. Or......

Truthfact 2:
..certainly not for all 21 countries. Localization is absolutely one hundred percent BS. Period. Truthfact! There are excuses nobody with any common sense would consider, look at the countries dropped. Cross reference that against languages spoken (official and otherwise).

I said yield issues 2 months ago and the chicks have come home to roost. There are knock on effects for launch titles, smartglass, etc. Instead of 180's they have 1 coherent vision and are now paying the price for that new direction.

Truthfact 3:
Late October launch for PS4. Sony SDK is ready and you can basically go gold with games now.

Truthfact 4:
For those people who were mad about Bayonetta 2 being WiiU exclusive you will be somewhat unhappy about what Microsoft are doing. They have moneyhatted Platinum Games. Other Japanese developers are in play but Kamiya is the only one I am solid on. These games won't be for North America or even Europe which makes no sense but whatever.

Truthfact 5:
Big Parks (no clue on this dev need help on that) cancelled game was a MOBA. It's dead now and the whole studio is focused on TV services. All of the best talent went to Big Tusk (again, unsure on dev) or left MS entirely. Rare is still Kinect focused, no matter what you've heard.

Truthfact 6:
New Indie publishing policy is not set yet. It will be done post-launch.

Truthfact 7: September surprise early!
Apologies in advance, everything I saw over the last 24 months was that there's no chance of a Kinectless SKU. This is concrete.

Whispers of optional Kinect (not in box) SKU early next year, March/April. Enough smoke from this fire that I didn't want to wait til September to share. Launch number fallout will play a large role in this.

Shitstorm imminent!
