I tried Redline MT-90...it was an improvement over stock, but the crunch was still there (even with a fair bit of warm up and some gentle driving).
Maybe I'll give this a try instead of the Motul. I understand that the trans needs time to warm up but I mean sometimes my car will still grind/ crunch all the way up to operating temperatures

some numbers.

i drained the original fill at 4900 miles an pumped in Subaru 75W-90. per the manual, slightly more rattle from the syncros and similar frustrating cold characteristics.

i will switch to ptx as i use it in another car....which shifts well from cold and it is compatible with yellow metals. 40ish a liter but cost per mile is trivial with normal drain intervals.

Trying another new oil and like it

I purchased a 2013 FR-s in October of 2017 with 16,000 miles to do SCCA Autocross (SSC) and a couple of track days. With the way I abuse cars I change all the fluids yearly and the engine oil about every 3,000 miles, which I know is way to early for synthetics, but I do it anyway. Last spring I changed the tranny and diff to Redline noticing quite the crunch threw 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the cold until it would warm up. I live in the midwest so we did get some negative degree weather. This past Saturday I changed out to Motul 300 for both tranny and diff again (now 24,000 miles on the car) and there is much less crunch and feels great when warm. I will say that we have not had any real cold since Saturday so I can't truly compare but in the low 40's the Motul definitely crunches less than the Redline. For this car I will not be going back to Redline fluids even though I ran it for 20 years in a Honda CRX MT but that is a different beast and was an Autocross trailer queen.

Hope this helps.

I tracked with Motul Gear 300 last summer and found my shifts were slow and notchy, so I'd really like to try something else.

Curiously, a buddy of mine ran this in his FRS:

https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produ...n-fluid-5w-30/

Amsoil Synchromesh - however reading about it, they spec it as a 5W30 fluid!

The Amsoil WEBsite recommends their 75W90 fluid for this transmission.

I replaced my stock fluid with Polaris Slingshot transmission fluid: https://lubricants.polaris.com/en-us...cants/2879440/

Harder to find GL3 but that is what the service manual recommends. 2nd gear is still a bit notchy below freezing before warming up, but better than before, and now completely smooth once the car is up to temp.

The 75W-90 GL3 oil looks / smells very different from the Redline 75W-90 GL5 I put in the differential. I noticed on draining that the trans / diff oils were quite different as well.

2nd gear grind...
I've barely had this problem but when I do its my fault not the oil lol. My friend complained about the same 2nd gear grind and I asked to drive his car. I had no issues while driving his BRZ so our conclution came down to he needs to practice on his shifting lol.... not saying this is the case with everyone but it might be the issue for alot of guys...
Perhaps you're shifting too early (shifting before 3000rpms will result in clunkiness) releasing clutch too early/not depressing cluth enough, car hasen't warmed up enough or you could have metal shavings....
I stick with Motul Gear 300 75w90

Bought my 2016 used last June with 27000 kl. I assume it had the original fluids in the tranny and diff. as it was dealer serviced by the previous owner.
I experienced no shifting issues whatsoever. Was planning to do HPDE & Lapping so I changed out the fluids to Motul 300 in the tranny and 300LS in the diff.
Immediately I experienced shifter stiffness and clunking going up into 2nd gear for the first few blocks each morning then it is fine. This at all temps, in fact it's stored in the winter so it hasn't been driven (by me) at freezing or lower temps.
Frankly, if it bothered me I'd switch back to OEM tranny juice first before gambling on other aftermarket brands.

I switched to Pentosin MTF2 (75w80) after a lengthy thread in this forum going over its qualities and its connection to Aisin transmissions. I did it at 40k and I have over 10k on it since. I cant argue with the results. Shifts are smoother, especially in the cold. (0F-50F) It comes factory in BMW M3's, and you can also buy it from Hyundai dealerships because it comes in the manual Genesis. The only downside is the price. Its usually around $25/qt retail.
