Oh, not at all .....

It's better to ask questions rather than worry about things.

I remember, back in the day, when I was about 8 years old, I offered to change the oil in my grandfather's new 1950 Pontiac. Yep, he pulled that machine up on a gravel incline in the barnyard so as I could get to the drain plug (and drain the oil down through the gravel into the ground)......

After I unscrewed the drain plug, and as the oil was draining out, I noticed it was a pretty red color and quite clear. I mentioned that to my grandfather and that it didn't look like the oil needed to be changed.

He was not happy with me! I had just drained the oil out of the automatic transmission!

DANG ...... what is an automatic transmission?

See, I SHOULD have asked a question, but, NOOOOO..... I thought I knew it all .....

I find that our cars take an awful long time to warm up fully. Maybe it's just where I live, weather is always cold most of the time.

Mine warms up in about 5 minutes of City driving even at minus 20.

The temp gauge doesn't have to read very high for the engine to be at proper operating temperature. If you have climate control the engine is warmed up when the heater begins delivering any heat.

There is some great info in this thread. I had someone just yesterday tell me they let their car idle for 15 minutes until the drive it when it is this cold (10 degrees to -40). When I asked why they told me "their dealer told them to". At that point I dropped it...

Anyone got any data on proper engine oil. I try to keep an eye on temps and would like to know the minimum oil temp before ripping on it. I know the water temp hit operating range before the oil. I just went for an easy 20 minute drive and oil temp was 186 when done IIRC

Oh btw yes this thread it's old as can be but figured it's better than starting a new one. I googled my nuts off and found this one.

Common sense says let things warm up. End of discussion?

Your car is warming up the second you start it. You might as well roll out of the drive and slowly be on your way. Better than just sitting there. Unless you have an on ramp nearby!

Yes. So what constitutes warm up? What oil temperate are we looking for? All other conversation, while helpful is all anecdotal.

transmission and diff need warming up as well, they also have gears, moving parts, and oil in them.

I just get in car, start immediately, then do all my things like sunglasses, seatbelt, radio, etc. Once I'm done, I drive off. Drive gently until engine/tranny/diff/etc are all warmed up. I see no point in idling for a while unless you're in super cold weather, but that's usually just to heat the interior or defrost windows from what I understand.

When I start mine, it starts at a high Idle, and I religiously wait the minute to minute and a half for it to idle down before starting off, and even then, I drive with Kit Care Gloves until the fluids come to temp. Knowing when I wake up in the morning, I want to wake up a little before being driven balls to the walls... Just Sayin...

I never wait. I turn the car on, put it in reverse, drive away.

is reverse even necessary? I've seen people that just put it in neutral and just roll down their driveway
