If the Supra flops you can bet the 86 and rumoured MR-2 successor are dead, dead, dead. Small RWD sports cars are a tiny automotive niche. If the wealthiest segment won't get on board with the Supra, Toyota Executives will argue there is definitely not a case for a more price sensitive market.

Agreed. Luckily the LC500 seems to be doing pretty well. I know it's not a small sports car, but it still gives me hope that a successful Lexus will allow Toyota to continue to produce unique cars.

Was just drooling over the LC on my work computer. I wonder how the performance package model does on the track.

I think the whole "There is a new MR2 coming" craze was a misquote that one blog wrote and the rest ran with.
What was said was that there was a possible "three car line up". The third smaller car was likely the S-FR that they actually put into concept. The whole MR2 thing sprang up and died about this time last year with never another word said about it. Not that there is any news about the S-FR either though. Probably wouldn't matter here anyway since both would probably be Japan only Kei cars.

The Supra will be a bloated pig. It will need 450HP just to be competitive. It will be packed full of luxury, opulence and new tech all which add weight and complexity, but the consumer in this price point demand.

I use to be a big fan of the BMW M cars, but they are just a joke now. Still fast, still handle well, but they are made for someone who thinks they are a prince.

Do you think the new Supra will be under 4,000 lbs? Will it be under $60K USD? On paper is it going to beat a GT350R? Trust me, I'm NOT a Ford fan, but I think this is a good benchmark.

I think it will weigh less than 3300lbs to be honest.

Good lord, they would struggle putting a I6 in the 86 and adding the required bits to double the HP and keep it under 3,500.

Just my opinion, but I think it will be over 4K lbs.

Too lazy to go look but the unofficial "leaked" weight is something around 3300. Not impossible but every single pound dropped adds $$$. Lighter is expensive.

The S2000 cost $35k in 1999.

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...ed-test-review

Caranddriver compared it against the 350z (2003) which was only $5k less, at $30k.

https://www.caranddriver.com/compari...touring-page-5

Taking inflation into account, you could spend $50k on something similar today.

https://www.dollartimes.com/inflatio...5000&year=1999 (not the best reference, but you get the point)

Its also the same physical size as the 86, the new Supra will be a bigger car, right? I mean the Z3 Coupe, 86 and NC Miata are pretty much the same size. I expect the car to grow from the Z4 don't you?

The E89 Z4 topped out at 3360 lbs. My guess is it'll come in between 3300 and 3500. Even at the low end that's 600lbs more than the twins though.

The new Supra is supposedly going to have a wheel base shorter than the 86 but a body that is slightly larger.

I like this article since they distrust the info as much as I do.

It’s also a hardtop convertible. The Supra/Z4 will be like 5 inches longer than the 86. Newer BMWs they have switched to the CLAR platform are slightly larger than the outgoing model, but weights like 200lbs less.
