The M240i XDrive is rear-wheel-drive based (unlike the 2-series Gran Coupe); aside from that - Overall design, interior quality, tuning potential. I assume we're talking about new-production cars and I'm not sure that there's anything at the price point that provides the all-around package.

WELP i just read this whole thread, from OP's post to end. HOLY CRAP the internet is wild. i gotta say as an outsider it was an entertaining read .

FWIW - I'm choosing 86 over Supra, but i know what excites me when driving and the 86 offers it.

Gotta say tho - first time i'm glad i'm poor, just thinking about what i'd actually do if i had the money puts my brain in a pretzel lol!

I’ve posted here before but I’ve got another feel. Track days involved in my situation the GR86 is a better car than the Supra for my life, but if it was purely a Sunday car with light daily driver duties and money wasn’t a factor I would take a Supra. That being said when you take costs into consideration there’s a lot of cars in the range of the 86-Supra cost that I would probably like to own over them.

yea, i've never been a bmw fan, so there's no way i can spend any long term time in a toyota-badged z4.

the only benefit to the supra to me is immediate resale value.

I just realized I never actually replied, too busy munching popcorn I guess...

I'd pick the GR86 over the Supra. (That wasn't so hard was it?)

Then again, I haven't actually test driven either of them so...

The list would be very long, but here’s a few (almost all of them are used cars now)

981 Boxster S manual because I like convertibles and have yet to own a P car, easily under the cost of a new Supra here, still somewhat affordable to run.

996 40 Jahre or C4S manual because they have “back seats” and would be somewhat affordable to buy and run, entry level P car in my view.

997.1 or 2 C2S manual, still under the price of a new Supra, less cookie cutter interiors than 996s, 997 bodystyle is my favourite 911 bodystyle (albeit more the GT3).

C6Z because torque, love the LS7, would never track a Corvette again though, road car only. Great body lines and liveable interior.

ND2 Miata, just an afforable fun car, low on consumable cost (good for track), room in the price for mods, newer and presumably fairly reliable.

AP1 or AP2 S2000. Had a ratty AP1, it’s the car I regret selling most but at todays average prices this would be a tough sell. Probably the best or second best manual transmission I’ve ever driven, loved the challenge of the cars flaws, stratospheric redline in the AP1 feels great even if it’s slow by todays standards.

E46 M3, a timeless design in my eyes, lots of budget to find a nice one or for major restoration, S54 is one of my favourite engines for induction noise, extra nostalgia because a E46 323ci was my dads first nice car when I was a teenager and I learned to drive on it.

E85 Z4M, same love for the S54, bitey chassis is fun to tame, I like the concave doors and short body.

M2/M2C, not overly a N55 fan but love the styling with the exception of the rear bumper, M2C very close to new Supra price for a used one, not a fan of the weight and probably wouldn’t want to track one like most cars on this list.

1SS 1LE, horrible running costs for track, but it’s capable. Like the looks, like the sound, find the visibility is not so bad, still available new and pretty capable out of the box with brake pads, alignment and wheels/tires.

I can think of lots of other cars but they stray far from 2 door sports cars in a lot of cases and none of them are new cars so not really relevant comparisons.

If money is no option and now that the Supra has a manual option, I’d test drive both to see which one I prefer. The lack of a manual on the Supra was a bit of dealbreaker for me before.

I’d love to see a review of a manual GR86 vs a manual Supra. But I still get the impression the Supra is more a GT car, whereas I prefer a light weight minimalist sports car.

I would decide with my head not my heart and take the Supra simply for the financial advantage. If I absolutely hated it I would sell it and buy the 86. If I went the other way the Supra might not be unattainable. I wouldn't dwell on whether I made the best decision I would only care if I enjoyed driving it.

Not an in depth review, but Top Gear ran one recently -
. Their conclusion was about the same as yours.

Yeah good review, looks wise, I really like the look of the new Supra. I thought it was a bit busy when I first saw it in photos, but having seen a few in person now, they really turn heads.

Can I just opt for a C8 Z06 or GT4 RS? I mean since money's not an option.
Are we talking about something that's not super car prices say under 150k? This would be the short list.

As for the other two.

The Supra's aesthetics are a contrived mess of fake vents and overreaching aggressive styling. Pair that with the reason I would be interested in a Supra (in theory) would be because I like JDM cars and... yeah.

So I guess I'd rather have the GR86 and an additional 30k to walk around with.
