Anyone ever have luck with the rope-in-a-cylinder trick?
Never tried it but my buddy once tacked a piece of steel rod onto an old spark plug and screwed it in and jammed everything up enough. Didn't seem to cause any damage on the old V8 but not sure I would try it on a modern engine. Rope trick is same principal with less risk of focused stress so don't see why it wouldn't work.

they're all about the same. just with equal parts dick measuring. i dynamat-ed my trunk lid, mostly because dynamat was the most accessible stuff. otherwise, it's all really just basic butyl-based mass loading material.. different brands salt their mix of butyl with different additives that are supposed to matter, and different brands will vary the thicknesses a little, but overall, i tend to prefer the aluminum foil backed stuff.

I like the idea of a solid rod because it can be a hard stop with the crank at 90 degrees. I don't like the idea of slowly scrubbing the journal while the rope squishes tight.

Will definitely keep the rod in mind. I have some plain steel tube that's about the perfect diameter.

I've done it with lawnmower engines. Didn't have much luck with the Z and I just now realized how it may have been really bad for it. We'll never know.

So, we are just going to abandon the idea of subject specific sub forums right?
