Ironically the two cars I had prior to my Zupra were a 2018 GT350 and a 2020 Camaro SS1LE.

Yes that big redline is a blast in the GT350 but it gets old because the car actually feels pretty slow below 5k rpm. After 5500rpm is where the fun starts but most of the roads I take are 35-50mph backroads and it is hard to wind the car out. The lack of torque down low in a bigger heavier car just gets old when you are used to more power.

But bigger than that is reliability. The Voodoo engine is flat plane crank and has been riddled with issues from the start. I personally know 2 owners who are both on their 3rd engines (all fixed under warranty) and neither car has over 30K miles.

Other than that you get a cheap Mustang interior and most of us had really poor panel alignment issues and sagging bumpers from the factory. Because of the wide Cup2 tires you get a lot of tram-lining (aftermarket can fix most of it). But nothing sounds like it (I deleted the resonator and man it sounded amazing) and there is something special about hitting 8K rpm and still having some room

The Camaro SS1LE, to me is the best performance sports car on a $40K budget out there. I much preferred it to the GT350. Better gearbox, you sit lower and feel more connected to the road, much more torque down low. Better fit and finish, better gearbox.

I loved driving the car on street and track but I never had an emotional connection to the styling of the car and the V8 in this and and C7 are just boring engines (IMHO). They get the job done but they don't feel special in any way.

The Supra feels noticeable faster to me for the style of driving that I do and there is a frantic sensation when you make full boost you don't get on any of the other two cars. It never gets old. And it's super cheap and easy to make another 100+ whp/tq if you want).

While I know the Supra styling is subjective (some love it some hate it) I absolutely love it. It looks and feels like an exotic next to a GT350 or Camaro (which just look like any other Mustang or Camaro to most people). Yes it has it's quirks. It is tight inside. If you are a bigger and taller person it probably is a poor car for you (I am 5'11" and have to tilt my head awkwardly just to get in). It has some fake vents. It has BMW logos stamped on parts all over the car.

And yes it is a big price jump over a GR86 (and lots of other cars like WRX's, GTI/Golf R, etc). The only other car I considered over the Surpa was the 718 Cayman. I drove the Cayman S but just could not do the 4 cylinder. I drove the Cayman 4.0 GTS and fell in love and would have taken it over the Supra if price was not a factor but I paid $53K out the door for the Supra (brand new loaded one and MSRP was $58K). The Cayman GTS was around $90K and was certified used. Ironically it was the Cayman that opened my eyes to how good an auto was because I much preferred the PDK than the manual in the Cayman. The gearing in the manual did not seem to match the engine, it felt almost like an afterthought. The PDK really matched with the engine and the shifts were so crisp and lightning fast. If the PDK is a 10 out of 10 the ZF in the Supra is an 8.5 out of 10. The shifts and gearing are spot on but just not quite as crisp as the PDK in the Cayman.

If you told me I had about $35-40K for a car I would probably buy a new GR86 for sure. Unless I could find a used Camaro SS1LE that still had warranty left then it might be tough (but Covid changed used prices and I got almost $7K more for my SS1LE than I paid new).

If money is not a problem, why not own both of them?

I own a 3.0 Supra and a 2013 FR-S and I have put deposit on a GR86. They are both fun car to drive but I prefer the raw feeling more of the 86 on the track.

Hi everyone I just registered on this forum and found this thread interesting.

I started doing Track days about 6 years ago with Miata's, I owned a 2005 Turbo NB and a 2010 NC I then transitionned to a 2015 M235i Xdrive as i wanted a more versatile car and was tired of doing hours long drive to the tracks in the cramped MX5..

I then got into a 2018 M2 DCT thinking this would me ultimate track day partner but I never really fell in love with it even tough I kept it 3 years, the DCT was magical on track but pretty boring the rest of the time, I went trough 3 suspension setups to try to tame the car for a good balance of street/track usage but never managed to acheive what I was looking for. At some point the car even had a full front and rear Essex Radi-Cal BBK kit.

Foward to 2021 we had a baby girl and with the crazy covid prices I swapped the M2 for a 2020 M340i Xdrive almost fully loaded, driver assist pro, individual paint, track package with huge brakes than only fit 19inch etc. I did track this car last summer and I was basically as fast as with the M2 and it was still great fun..

I've been eying Cayman/Boxster GTS 4.0 for a while because I really really miss the Manual gear box rowing and driving pleasure I felt in the Miata's.. I just can't resolve myself to the Porsche price tag.. I mean a new one with options I would like is in the 120k CAD range. And then comes in the 2nd Gen GR/BRZ, I had 0 interest in the 1st gen but now with mostly all the deficiencies resolved it got my seriously interested, I have an appointment tomorrow to put a deposit on a Pavement Premium 6MT.

I don't know if this helps but my ZF in the M340i is probably pretty similar to the one in the Supra (my friend actually owns one and I drove it) and on track it does the job but coming from a M235i I always felt that car had too many gears to manage on track. Do you guys think I will like the GR ? Btw I will be keeping the M340i for street/daily and high speed tracks.

For me, if I could only choose between GR86 and Supra 3.0 and money was no object it would probably be the Supra. Mostly due to that awesome B58 engine. I loved my 86 but I never loved the anaemic FA engine. FA24 is an improvement on the FA20 I’m sure, but it will never match a sweet 6 cylinder.

If I was actually in the market and the Supra set the top of my budget I would hold off on the Supra until the new Z came out and test drive both. I think the Supra will still have the performance edge, but I prefer the styling of the Z and manual is an option!

If money was no object and any car was possible I’d probably go with the new Lotus Emira (V6 version) or a Cayman GTS 4.0 (probably not the GT4 since my car is for 99% daily street use and the GT4 would be unnecessary overkill). Yes, I have a thing for 6 cylinders, prefer them to most budget V8s.

I’m not really that drawn to the next class of supercars (911 Turbo S, Ferrari, Lambo etc) above the Emira or Cayman, too big, too flashy, and the extra performance isn’t useable on the public roads I use anyway.

GR86. No manual in the supra, and it's too heavy for me. I'd pay the extra for the supra if it was manual and lighter and felt like I was the one doing the driving.

If money wasn't an issue and I had to choose between the BMW Z4 tuned by Toyota or a 2nd gen twin, I'd get the twin. Then I'd figure out how to swap a VR30DDTT and CD009 into it and then load a ton of money into suspension. Yeah, that'd cost more money than it'd actually be worth. But the premise IS money not being an issue afterall.

Ah, ok. Well, just in my case, I’ve got to have back seats, inexistent as they practically are in the GR86. Can def get small humans back there.

Or the RS if you can deal with a PDK.

I would take the Supra, sell it and buy a GR86. And use the "extra change" to turbocharge the 86.
Then go and race the Supra I sold.

That's because the gearing IS an afterthought. Those schmucks at Porsche gave the Cayman crappy gearing in 2006 and never looked back. The manual transmission in a 2022 Cayman (any of them, they all use the same one) has the exact same ratios as the 2006 Cayman S.

Also a lot of you fellas are so nitpicky. The price no object question obviously meant if you removed price from the equation which of these 2 would you pick. Not hey you've got unlimited money what you want?

I'd have to drive both. I'm not as much a hater of weight or automatics since I took my C63 to the race track haha. I dare say it was more fun than tracking my Cayman. But I also have 2 other cars in the garage that are sub 3000 lb and manual transmission equipped. If I had to pick just ONE car to have it absolutely has to be manual equipped. So GR86.
