I'm an idiot, I assumed by fronts were done (I knew my OEM rears were). Ordered new fronts and rears. Fronts are well over 50% life left. 15k miles so far, I'd say 30-35 events (about 1/3 with a codriver) and a decent bit of hard backroad driving.

I like them for dual duty. I took them off for the winter because they need a little heat to work at first and they are too dusty for my winter wheels.

Anyone tried the Project Mu B-Force pads? They're advertised as a street and auto-x pad.

Did an LA event on my way back to the Bay. 80 degrees in January!
Their tire classes are combined in a way that groups BS with higher-horsepower cars, so I'll just put down the overall results for street classes, plus the top finishers in ST classes for context. (Don't know how to link to results, which are behind a pw wall.) There are some pretty sparkly names behind the 370z. S2CS Jeff Stuart 2012 Nissan 370Z 71.040 0.821 58.324 STC Jeff Wong 1991 Honda Civic Si 71.774 0.824 59.141 STX Max Hayter 2013 Subaru BRZ 71.928 0.827 59.484 STR Bob Endicott 2006 Honda S2000 71.081 0.838 59.565 S2CS Guy Walker 2013 Nissan 370Z 72.632 0.821 59.631 S1FS Matt Ales 2006 BMW M3 73.034 0.818 59.742 S2CS Michael Yanase 2013 Scion FR-S 72.921 0.821 59.868 S2DS Jayson Woodruff 2013 Subaru Impreza WRX 73.716 0.815 60.079 S2CS Des Toups 2013 Scion FR-S 73.185 0.821 60.085 S1AS James Yom 2008 Honda S2000 CR 72.231 0.833 60.168 S2ES Leonard Cachola 2004 Mazda Miata 73.986 0.814 60.225 S2DS Kurt Rahn 2010 Mini 74.600 0.815 60.799 S2CS Sean Fenstermacher 2013 Scion FR-S 74.453 0.821 61.126 S2DS Ken Lord 2013 Subaru WRX 75.245 0.815 61.325 S1BS Byron Goodman 2007 Honda S2000 73.921 0.831 61.428 (Plus another 20-25 Street folks removed for space. Sorry.) The course was not the worst for the FRS (not a huge amount of time on the rev limiter and only one big pinchy spot). Stuart paxed third overall even with the new grinch indexes. Another national champ, Brian Peters, drove Stuart's Z in the afternoon and matched the 71.0. Stuart had a 70.0 with a cone. The fastest FRS is the one SimpleIsBest (Sean in the results) set up with 245 Rivals and tuning to make them work. I am a Dunlop fanboy but it felt terrific. During the previous day's practice it was much closer to the Z (maybe a second?). This is a single data point only, YMMV, etc. Some folks may have been on last year's tires, hung over, fighting a severe skin rash. It would help if there were more Zs out there to compare with. Yup! 245/40-17 on our 17x7s (et +42) It fits. Your tire mounter will learn to hate you, but they fit.
Need to play with alignment and shock settings some more, but I'm sure it'll work. Lateral grip seems to be there in spades. Not sure about the severity of the trade offs of the set up. We'll see. I couldn't drive myself out of a wet paperbag that day, but my hot shoe (Mike Yanase) did pretty well. Coned away his last run and ended in 3rd. Lost to both 370z's. so what about all that yahoo-mahoo about sidewall stiffness and how street tires can't be treated like hoosiers
seems to be you're proving the science wrong?

Have yet to try the 245s in a long slalom, but they still felt good in the quick transitions. Car set needs to be tweaked though to make it more optimum, as we got a bit of push on corner exit. I think it can be dialed out though. 225s felt more responsive. 235/40s feel more responsive. 245 isn't spongy, just a bit less initial communication from the tire I think. |

I think the 245s will be faster for the types of courses I see and the situation of having a fast co-driver (more heat). I didn't think you could over-tire the RS3 (soft sidewall) as much. For the surfaces I see, I think the Rival is faster for our camber challenged car.
I don't believe that last year's Lincoln results with the tires apply to my region, as our surfaces are not as rubberized. |
