Nice SP-01. Kinda want a CGW reworked 97B with threaded barrel for home defense - alas, no rail.

My newest purchase, Ruger P89 9mm, alongside my Springfield Champion

I like metal guns, just can't see myself owning a plastic gun.

5.7 is weird...and commercial production/availability has shied me away from it. I suppose if you have a PS90 it'd be a great companion pistol.

The 5.7 is essentially a .22 magnum, but with marketing. The "military & police" version may be an okay armor penetrator, but that kind of ammo that they let us civilians have is much stepped down and definitely not as effective, even against soft un-armored badguys.

I'm not sure about y'all, but I wouldn't want a glorified .22mag pistol which costs me near as much as a 1911 (the FiveSeven is over $1k last I checked). Doesn't matter how much capacity it has if the round isn't all that great.

The first Fort Hood shooter would have had a MUCH higher body count if he'd used, oh, say a service-issue Beretta M9 in 9mm (even the crummy FMJ the military is forced to use thanks to an idiotic interpretation of the Hague (iirc) convention) instead of a FiveSeven.

The PS90 suffers from the same anemic ammo problem and from being semi-only (a P90 having select fire could end up with better results b/c of the higher fire rate increasing the likelihood of at least one of those rounds getting lucky).

If I have to use a pistol-caliber long gun (that's what a pistol carbine is), I'd rather use +P or +P+ JHP ammo in a conventional, effective caliber such as 9mm, 40S&W, 45ACP, or 357Sig (preferably 357Sig due to the much higher velocities with the same caliber rounds as 9mm).

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm sure the FN FiveSeven is really fun to shoot, and I'm sure it's a real gem on the range and such. Well worth it as a fun gun. I just wouldn't want to have to rely on it to save my life.

All my other handguns are metal-frame. I just really wanted one of these in particular. :P

Yeah, I got it to have fun plinking with. I'm more likely to carry my Baby Eagle (.40 S&W) or Rhino (.357 Mag) for self-defense.

The 5.7 is a niche cartridge with a very specific use.

A .22 will penetrate kevlar due to the small surface area defeating the chinese finger puzzle principal. It gets through the weave gaps rather than pulling them tight against the nose of the bullet.

The 5.7 does this, but with more effective hydroshock capability when it reaches flesh.

Normal handgun rounds 9mm, 45acp, 357, etc. are stopped by kevlar.
You have to knock the target down with a big caliber then place a round in the apricot while the target is down before it shoots you.

The 5.7 enters flesh on the first shot. Probably the reason the original design round is not generally available for civilian use.

Actually, they penetrate just fine. 9mm does, that is. Protective vests aren't just kevlar.

Kevlar resists cutting, not puncture. So, kevlar is great against knives, but shoot it, and you've still got problems.

And the 5.7 cartridge that civilians are allowed to buy won't penetrate. It's specifically downloaded so it won't (whoever made that decision watched and believed Lethal Weapon 2 a bit too much I think).

Effectively, even in military and police, except in the P90, it's a gimmick cartridge. Neat idea, poor execution (it's a friggin PISTOL round, not a good and proper rifle round), expensive as hell compared to cartridges which generally work quite well, for values of "work" among pistols.

We have shot kevlar vests with 9mm and the rounds DID NOT penetrate.
We have shot kevlar vests with 22 rimfire which did.
