If you have lived and driven in Minnesota for at least three years you should have known better.

I agree. Also, AWDs don't brake any better than fwd or rwd - good tires or bad tires.

So much of the thread comments here are related to how much experience and skill one has in driving in inclement weather. It pays to know beforehand when buying a car how it will operate in the conditions one will be expecting to drive in.

True, and if you take one winter in these cars on summer rubber, you will learn a lot about it.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you use the BRZ/FR-S as you DD during the winter?

I'm moving to Michigan in a couple of months and am really keen on buying the BRZ. But, that would be only car (DD) and I haven't driven on snow yet. What would you guys suggest?

I daily my car in the winter. Good set of snows on the stock rims. Also put a heavy Anvil in the trunk. Just need to be smart about when and how you drive. I've only got in trouble once the bottom starts dragging.

I do carry a small foldable shovel and tow strap in my trunk just in case.

'Just need to be smart about when and how you drive'.

Could you please elaborate on that? I'm assuming it snows for around 4-5 months in MI, so does it vary on the intensity of the snowfall? In that case, you have a second car to drive around? Pardon my knowledge on MI!

A friend in detroit has no issues driving is 99 miata on winter tires back and forth to work 45 miles each way this winter.

It has the potential to snow 4-5 months out of the year, but there is not snow on the ground nearly that much, at least not in recent years.

Some people have winter beaters, but I know a lot of FR-S and BRZ owners that faired last winter just fine with only winter tires.

I drove mine last winter in west MI on the stack all seasons and made it through, but would recomend real winter tires and 100+ lbs in the trunk . I also have been driving rear wheel drive all my life in MN and MI FWIW

I took my car up to the Santa Fe Ski area to get more familiar with it in the parking lot. I have Michelin pilot A/S. I would have felt better with a Hydrophilic Snow tire.

My only advice is to leave the nannies on in inclimate weather.

If its a blizzard out its probably not going to work out to great, if its light snow you can probably make it. When your driving keep your momentum going forward it will greatly help. Also being gentle with the pedals helps, quick throttle will spin the wheels.

I hit a big storm the second day I had my car, still on the factory michelins I made it the 2 hr trip I had to drive on factory tires. When I could I followed in others cars tracks. I saw a number of awd subarus in the ditch that trip.

It really depends where in MI. If you're up north, good luck. If you're out west, have fun. If your east, ehh. If your middle, who knows, no one lives there anyways
