Making it a multi-checkbox, I had to vote for the top 4 tied.
Boxer Four - not much to explain with this one. In our twins, but also the mainstay of the Subaru brand. Always respected them, and love the concept. But, I'd have to say the twins really made me fall in love. Boxer Six - similar reason, but mostly because Porsche used them in the 911 for many years. Inline Six - I find this format interesting, as you create a very narrow and very long engine. BMW used them for years in their 5 series, and the SUV I used to have (GMC Envoy) had one. V8 - nothing like the deep sound of a good V8. Can't say much more. The Corvette probably has the most beautiful sounding one.

V10, Carerra GT or LFA.
H6, I like the sound of all even fire 6s but I put H6 since they have better mass distribution. Kind of arbitrary. Inline 4 because they're good for having fun cheaply and the low bass sound at lower rpms is surprisingly satisfying (my own car with the new exhaust I put on is why) |

Inline four and Boxer four.
Because small cars are more fun. :-)

I voted V12 but on second thought I think I prefer V10's almost entirely because of two engines: the 4.8L 1LR-GUE in the LFA and the 5.7L 980 in the Carrera GT. Both sound absolutely demonic at 8000+ rpm and make over 100hp/L. The Ferrari F50's 4.7L V12 makes a very good case for itself though.
But if we're talking accessible engines found in cars that don't cost an arm and two legs, I'm a big fan of the old school Honda VTEC units like the F20/22C and B series inline fours and C30/32A V6. Basically, any engine that is naturally aspirated, produces a high specific output, and revs to over 8000 is a winner in my book. |

I am so pleased to admit I bought into the highest ranking vote. Inline Six.
the RB series motors to me sound the absolute best ..there is nothing like the pitch perfect soprano of an RB20 revved to 9k with a proper tune compared to the oscillating idiosyncrasies of a 4 banger (though I still respect a good 4 banger). 4 bangers sound like this girl at work who keeps trying to sing but has no concept of musical theory ..and cant seem to tell if she is flat or sharp ... And V8's can go fuck themselves ... the sound of a V8 is like a body builder pounding his chest but has never been in a REAL fight in his entire life. Anybody could "sound" like that. Now a ...4 rotor and a V12 revved out ...we are talking "Banshee". The scream of the bringer of death ....I will never forget how that sounds. |

1.5L supercharged V-16 from the 1950's BRM F1 car....small liter, screaming motor that makes a Ferrari envious but also has so much grunt and rumble it would make a corvette weak and faint.... very unique engine sound. If only the motor was more reliable...
There was also an H-16 version... I also enjoy properly done V6's...and by properly done I mean Ferrari V6's... But I will say my favorite automotive motor configuration is probably the V10...

1JZ's sound epic, and rev like a motherfucker.
But best sounding engine I've ever heard is my buddy's 7M, revving out to 7400 rpm at ~32psi. Sounds like Odin is ripping apart the sky.

I like Boxer/Flat engines in general, so I voted Boxer 4 and Boxer 6.
But my favorite engine is 72° V10 like in LFA. Most perfect engine ever IMO. I also voted other, I am thinking of Boxer 8. THere was only one of such kind of engine, fitted in the Porsche 908 racing car. |
