I am going to number things out to make it less messy. 1) They used to designate AWD models with an "XI" (e.g: 325xi, 330xi). 2) I get what you are saying regarding the 228i being "slow", however, here is what is possible: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1117222. No, that is not what I am going to do with my car if I were to get one, however, it shows what can be done thanks to it being lighter. My point is 228i is not just a simple city slow car; it has potential. 3) I didn't realize that the xDrive only comes with Auto. Since that is the case, I am no longer interested in an xDrive model. Anyway, you can see that the M235i is consistently ~200 lbs heavier than the 228i. The weight distribution numbers speak for themselves. You referred to 228i xDrive vs M235i in your argument; I was actually interested in RWD to RWD only and AWD to AWD only. 228i Weight Curb Weight Manual transmission 3295 lbs Curb Weight Automatic transmission 3345 lbs Weight distribution, front/rear Automatic transmission 50.8/49.2% Weight distribution, front/rear Manual transmission 50.4/49.6 % Engine Link: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx M235i Weight Curb Weight Manual transmission 3505 lbs Curb Weight Automatic transmission 3535 lbs Weight distribution, front/rear - Automatic Transmission 52.2/47.8 % Weight distribution, front/rear Manual Transmission 51.9/48.1 % Link: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx 228i xDrive Weight Curb Weight Automatic transmission 3470 lbs Weight distribution, front/rear Automatic transmission 50.7/49.3% Link: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx M235 xDrive Weight Curb Weight Automatic transmission 3695 lbs Weight distribution, front/rear - Automatic Transmission 53.5/46.5 % Link: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx 4) DINAN: Stage 1 (DINANTRONICS Performance Tuner ONLY) Maximum Power: 311 HP, 328 lb-ft of torque. Price: $1,544.00 USD. Link: http://www.dinancars.com/product/d44...-f36-428i-n20/ Regarding this comment from you: "As far as aftermarket goes, we can't even discuss that because it's all semantics. Any car can beat any other car with X amount of dollars put into it", I wasn't comparing a 228i to a M235i, I was saying a 228i can be made fast quite easily and and can be considered to be a pretty good buy given better balance, lighter weight, adequate power / higher everyday fun factor (slow car/fast driver), better MPG and lower cost. The only thing the 228i is competing for here is whether it meets a certain set of needs and how well does it do it. 5) M2 > M235i making M235i pointless just like you said. I think the 228i can be quite the bang for the buck... that is all! |

Bit of an odd comparison, but for my money the answer is M2 anyday. I think the 2-series design looks slab-sided overall, but the fender flares on the M2 largely fix that. The M2 is also probably the purest of the M cars today, hearkening back to the E46 M3 not only in dimensions but also driving feel.
You should read the article where Klaus Frohlich (BMW's chief engineer) talks about his performance and handling targets with the M2. He basically benchmarked the E46 M3 and wanted to create its spiritual successor, but with better performance. He also claims that unlike base 2-series cars, the M2 is fully track-capable from the factory (if that's something that's important to you.) If you're looking for the car in the BMW lineup today that best distills down the essence of the M series, I think you have to go with the M2. http://www.forbes.com/sites/markewin.../#4a77d18aa1c4

The 2 series was ranked the most reliable "sporty" car for 2015 by Consumer Reports. I'd rather wait it out and stay but if it means a bishop has to protect a pawn, then so be it.
If you order an M2 now, word has it that you could be waiting up to a year for it. |

If you were to come here and put your name on the waiting list, the earliest you'd probably see it would be Feb-Mar of 2017.
