BRZ vs 2015 WRX STI

How is that possible? It's highway EPA rating is 23, IIRC.

Maybe with some serious drafting I could almost believe that to be possible? The S2000 was rated 25 hwy and when traveling in a pack of cars for a while I could too 30-31 mpg. But on flat roads with no traffic 27-28 was the very best, with AC off.

The revised EPA rating is 23 mpg highway, which is supposed to reflect more real-world results with their newer testing methods from 2008 onward. The original rating was 25 mpg highway, as indicated on the window sticker (which I probably have in my glovebox).

If you look through my best numbers which you can see when all fill-ups are charted (just look for the highest spikes), I've done it enough times to not consider it a fluke, though like I said before, it's not reflective of typical highway mpg in this car. I don't draft (as I'd rather not risk rear-ending someone), but I recall those awesome tanks being trips earlier in the morning when I don't need to run the A/C and potentially avoided any traffic that might pop up when there are more people on the road. I think I stayed around 70 mph, but I just babied the throttle and let off of the gas a lot (which I believe utilizes closed loop mode more, especially when you're at that speed).

But even my last tank which I think was 23.8 mpg was me driving pretty fast (typically 85-90 mph... I don't endorse speeding but I was in a hurry and driving two hours away to see a family member who was in the hospital) and with a couple of blasts to 100 mph (that part was just me speeding, on the way back home on Sunday night). So in that case, I certainly wasn't babying the car but was still able to get a decent tank average.

It's the city driving with this car that kills the mpg though.

Oh, also, it was PURE freeway mpg, which I wanted to do to see what the car was fully capable of doing. By that, I mean that I filled up immediately before jumping on the freeway (so the car was already warmed up and didn't need to waste any fuel getting up to operating temps, like when you start up your car in the morning) and again immediately after exiting the freeway. It's not cheating (and is something entirely possible, except I just did it on purpose), but it helps cut out the little things that waste gas to see what the max numbers can be.

22 mpg in your Evo is pretty good. That's better than my old STI hatch, in which I averaged just over 19 mpg.

For reference, I've been averaging about 25 mpg in my FR-S.

I can believe that. A buddy of mine who had a 2008 STI also had a lifetime average of something around 19-20 mpg, looking at the display in his car... and that included A LOT of highway driving, as he was a snowboarding junkie who frequently went from Orange County to Mammoth Lakes.

I have owned two Stis, Evo and those mpg figures are highly optimistic if you ask me ...typically most people average 18-19mpg combined (city and highway) ..one time I wanted to test to see what could be achieved for highway driving only and with grandma driving I was able to get 24-25 mpg which will people can never really see normally...I am not sure how you can see 31 mpg with an Evo, I would definitely double calculate since it's too good to be true..

Back to topic I think the 2015 WRX will have a better engine than the 2015 STI since EJ engines are outdated and people have been so many issues with them...
If it has to be an AWD and the car will also be used for track and modified, Evo wins by a big margin ..bang for the buck factor is a lot bigger in Evos compared to Subarus..

I would still prefer the lightweight cars such as Miata and BRZ after owning all of these cars ( see my sig) but to each his own

2015 WRX makes even more torque and at low end compared to STI, it's obviously underrated ..I am also pretty sure it'll response better to the mods since it's DI engine

WRX > STi in 2015.

We'll see if the mid cycle refresh to a new DI engine is true.

No need to double-calculate, especially when you plug in the numbers and the computer calculates it for you. It's on my Fuelly account (in my signature) and I also document it on MS Excel (which I used long before Fuelly). The numbers come straight from the pump and from the trip meter, and I ALWAYS do complete fill-ups until the pump clicks off, for consistency.

I've owned two Evos... one from 2006 to 2007, and another from 2007 to now. My first one had a similar average but I think the best I managed in that one was somewhere around 26 mpg, but obviously I've figured out some things over another several years of ownership.

Oh, I wasn't referring to your signature sorry for the confusion, if you're really careful and don't have a heavy foot 21-22 mpg is possible but there is no fun to drive like that Evos are very nice cars and very underrated for what they offer IMO, if it wasn't for the Vette I wouldn't get rid of my EVO X GSR.. for track you really have to be careful with the fuel level in your tank though, I had fuel cut couple times and started watching my fuel levels ( kept over 3/8 of tank) that fixed the issue..some people use anti surge tank..

Have you ever had issues with your clutch?

Oh yeah, I agree... it gets boring that way, but I've always been curious about the best mpg I could get.

No issues with the stock clutch so far, at 70k miles.
