The convertible concept looks hot. As long as the body was designed to be a convertible from the get-go and not an after thought, I'm sure the body rigidity would not be an issue (s2k, miata, boxster all capable cars).
However, the purpose of GT86 was to be an affordable light weight fun sports car. Making it convertible will hit the affordable and light weight purpose of the car though. 2cent

Whats with all the hate? As for the extra weight, how many of you are actually gonna take this car to the track? The extra weight isnt going to matter in my opinion. I think making an 86 roadster is an awesome idea. Expanding the 86 line is a good idea.
This is a new toyota, do you think that they're simply are just gonna make the 86 a convertible? I'm sure Tada-san and his team are hard at work to make the roadster version as enjoyable as the coupe. Anyways if it really bothers you that much you can always modify the car, no one said you have to leave it in its showroom configuration. |

Don't forget the new lightweight SkyActive MX-5 is due shortly and the sales in that niche should show a good bump. Toyota is simply being proactive here. Competition is good for any enthusiasts car, and the sports car market in particular need all the attention from the press/mags/manufacturers it can get. What I hope is Mazda intro a new Coupe MX-5 as competition to the Toybaru models.... |

Gotdamn! that looks great. Hopefully it doesn't look quite as nice in person because I sold myself on the coupe but there are definitely moments when it's nice to drive with the top down...
Ffffffuuuuuuuu... I just have to keep telling myself "You're tracking the car, you'll prefer the coupe." Oh well, the more variants the better - hopefully it persuades other companies to produce a competitor. |

I don't understand the hate. Not like the only option is a convertible. I say bring it, more options to choose.

Don't want stop the hype but Autobild or Bild in general is a bit like the Sun in the UK.
To bring light into the dark: The headline is bullshit. Tetsuya Tada only said the 86 is constructed to be compatible as a roadster. That's no new info and that's no confirmation a roadster is planed. This magazine often bends the truth to get some attention. |

Case closed?
7. A Convertible Isn't Likely Tada-san didn't say it specifically, but it's clearly how he feels. He admits that a convertible version is possible, though. But because the car was designed as a hardtop from the beginning and it relies on its roof for both structure and handling ability, the idea of a convertible FR-S is a bad one. "It would require plenty of additional engineering, more bracing and more weight," says Tada-san. Scion isn't asking for it, but here's our advice: Don't bother. http://www.insideline.com/scion/fr-s...dont-know.html I personally trust insideline and what they quote. how reliable is Autobild? Just sayin... Quote:

I'm fine with them building a convertible but this is like the worst news possible for me. it is highly unlikely they will release a convertible and a FI model in the same year so that means we may be 2 years from an sti version if they follow the standard release the coupe and then the convertible a year later.
