GTS rear left popping/clicking sound and fix.

Hi Guys,
After about 2,000 km my GTS started having a metal-on-metal-sounding click/popping noise coming form the back left, difficult to localise but sounded like it was coming from the back shelf/behind the back seat. It happened at all speeds and seemed to be related to some of the metal plates flexing. It was getting louder and more frequent as time went on.

Anyway it was starting to drive me crazy and after looking around I found the following link:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21868

There is a pdf link for the Subaru TSB 12-140-12

This has two possible fixes for the problem, I tried the first last night with some WD40 and the noise is gone.

Just thought I'd pass this on in case anyone else was having the same issue. The noise is a known problem with the BRZ, and the TSB was incorporated into production so this is fixed in the factory but this apparently hasn't happened for the 86. It is more likely to happen on the back left rather than the back right.

If you get a popping sound from the rear left give that a try.

Cheers,
sigma.

I read that the problem is due to the spot weld being insufficient, so if they add more to the right spot that should fix it. I'd recommend showing them that pdf with the right place to work on.

I couldn't find any Australian TSB, any info on that would be great, but they're the same car the world over.

So I got my car back;

They had the TSB!! They applied this method as the welding is the more drastic mesure.

15 minutes after picking up my car the noise is louder then before :s...

Just got my car back last week for this repair. Had to go into Sydney City Toyota twice to get this repaired. First time they couldn't fix it. Second time, they had a Toyota specialist mechanic come our from head office to have a look. They applied some special lubricant and grease to the area, and opened the flaps surrounding the weld joint a little and that seemed to fix the problem. Have had the car for over a week now and no noise has come back. It was driving me insane. Apparently ALL 86's/BRZ's will get this noise sometime in their lifetime.

Thanks man! i also get my 86 serviced at Syd City Toyota. I'll get them to fix this on mine, been baring with it for almost half a year. It's really getting on my nerves now LOL! Always keep forgetting to do it myself, but then, I'm not that confident in work with panels, afraid of scratching or denting anything.

question; how much was the fix or was it free?

Cheers!

Could you show us exactly where you put the welds? Might do this myself. Still no noise after the WD40 but it'll come back one day, don't think that stuff can last forever.

It can be quite funny at times to hear how dealers explain things to customers, such as "insufficient" weld, when that is not the case. Also when they say "head office" ... that sounds to me like the national head office, but I know it was only the Sydney regional office.
Anyway, to actually answer a question ... dealers and their staff are not allowed to share bulletins with customers, unless there is an attachment which is intended for customers reference. Those responsible for sharing the spare wheel and rough idle bulletins are no longer working for Toyota!

The guy that shared the spare wheel bulletin is still working for the dealer up north.
