Seems doable with more aluminum throughout like doors, smaller wheels, suspension and brake components and driveshaft to start.
The car is already pretty light as it is, compared to other stuff out there. Shedding 200 pounds without making it too expensive is a really big task. I don't think it's doable with what you're suggesting. One thing that came to mind was the brochure for my Evo, which mentioned some of the weight savings:

Aluminum hood, roof and front fenders: -26.4 lbs
Aluminum door crash beams: -7.7 lbs
Magnesium valve cover: -3 lbs
Hollow camshafts: -2.2 lbs
Aluminum wheels: -1.32 lbs (compared to the prior year's aluminum wheels)

That's already a lot of stuff on my car that they did, and it saved just 40 pounds on something that's already a lot bigger to begin with. Still a long way to go, without really going too exotic.

The rest of the world gets 3 or 4 different trim levels whereas we get the base plus what ever you can get bolted on at the dealer at any given time.

PS I am very happy with it the way it is and not personally interested in any of the other levels but know there are many that would like them!
More choices are always welcome, but that would come at a cost that would likely push up the price further. There are already enough people (not necessarily on this forum) who whine about how they think the car costs too much and should be $20,000. More variants of a car that is already fairly limited to begin with would make finding the exact model you want a little difficult, when you factor in transmission, color, trim level, etc. It's not a big deal when you're talking about something like a Civic since they make hundreds of thousands of those, but this is a car where you might only see a handful of them on lots. We were in the market for a BRZ a little earlier, and there were no white ones anywhere near me.

Also, with Toyota branding it as a Scion here, it was inevitable that they'd keep the lineup as simple and as affordable as possible. Be glad that they shipped the special editions that were pseudo-trim levels.

I'm not surprised about the convertible. It would cost more and probably end up being slower than the new miata.

Vert Frs looks lame. Makes it look like a family car when the top is down. I don't get convertibles to be honest.

Totally agree with everything you said and have said the exact same thing many times. Even though it may sound as if I am talking on both sides of the argument there are some people that would be willing to pay for the extras/stripped down models. I am not one of them however.
As far as the people that think it cost too much already well, they are usually not "car guys", have no clue what went into it and are judging based on it's lack of luxury items. These are probably the same people that would wrap it around a tree within a week then blame Toyota for making a "bad " car.

Oh noes, you mean I won't have to pay for an overpriced TRD turbo and I'll have to install a better turbo at less cost myself?

Oh noes, you mean I won't have a car with a couple hundred extra pounds with reduced rigidity?

Bummer...

Well ... It will be interesting to see the future sales numbers for the 86 when essentially every new year will be the SAME car. The SAME car is awesome, but the finicky buying public are always looking for something newer and better. The one and done concept ends with DONE.

Just because the car won't get a turbo or drop top doesn't mean they won't offer a facelifted 86 with more power and standard features.

Kinda hard to tell what they're planning... despite them saying a turbo won't happen now, they HAVE tested it, along with electric motors in the wheels, and also a 2.5L. Maybe, they will go ahead and give us a 2.5L for gen 2... but, then again, they said that it might one day use a completely different (non-boxer) engine... but they also said they want all early adopters to be able to buy updates.

They've said too many contradicting things. Makes it difficult to predict what they might do...

We should know soon. They've been quick to reveal MY changes well before production. We knew about the '14 Monogram this time last year, the '15 RS 1.0 soon after so if the trend continues, leaks about the '16 are due in a week or so.

Oh goddammnit Toyota fucking everything up again, calling it now the '13s will only be worth $10k next summer as everyone jumps ship as they finally realize their sexuality: Miata or Mustang.

Edit: Whoosh

Or those Prius drivers whose sexuality may fall somewhere in between the two.
