These motors like to rev. As long as you aren't doing repeated clutch dumps and missing gears, you shouldn't have to worry about breaking too much. I tend to be nice to mine, but I'm not afraid to rev it out to 7k+ when I'm having fun with it.

Knowing this, I'm always reluctant to consider purchasing a used performance car. And right now, I'm reluctant to take my BRZ over 6000 rpm, because of the DI issues.

You should have gone scion... at least they don't void the warranty just because they feel like it.

The limit is the driver.

A good driver will know what the limits of the car are, and drive to the best of his/her ability (which may or may not hit the car's limits).

An average driver will hit the limits of the car, but often exceeding his/her own driving abilities.

The two are not the same, and no amount of armchair advice given online can help you on this.

Noob question - what's the best way to do that (on the stock car that is)?

Garage
Every time I have taken this car out, it has seen 5k+ RPMs. The rear tires have seen more high angle/high speed drifts than any car I have owned before. I once did a standing burnout for 40 seconds (this is all on a closed track, of course) and the tires didn't even lose a 32nd of tread.

I beat the hell out of this car, but I meticulously care for it's engine and transmission. Fluids are changed on time and never cheaped out on. As long as you perform proper maintenance and don't do anything idiotic, you can have your way with this car and it will still greet you with its goofy, fanged smile every time you start it up.

Lacking an oil temperature gauge, I use a small kitchen timer set to 10 minutes. I've usually driven 5-6 miles in that time.

I use only part throttle and 3000 rpm max, and especially avoid lugging up hills at low rpm. I'll do 3000 rpm up a hill rather than 2000 rpm when cold.

After 10 minutes, I progressively use more throttle and raise the rpms.

"But I'm only 2 miles from work! I'll never be able to push it hard!" some complain.

It's a problem, I know.

When it's time to buy a used BRZ, ours is the one you want.
