Well, I finally took the whole week off of work to tear out my engine this week. I will be tearing out my FA20 engine tomorrow and dropping it off with LJ at Full Blown Motorsports on Friday. Hopefully in the next week or so we will know what happened to my engine and hopefully if FBM has time they can take a couple of pictures. I'd love to send it to Toyota especially if the Forced Induction didn't cause it...

I will try to do another update when I have more information about my current issues too. Hope everyone's issues get worked fairly and soon.

Got my car back and it seems it is not 100%. I still have valvetrain noise to say the least.

Spark plugs & vvti ocv replaced.
Hpfp on hold as they are awaiting revision number 3... Yes, a third p/n revision on the hpfp...

Didn't have to go far...

Update 8:
27 Nov 2013

Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF): I am F'ed lol.

Basically after getting closer to my engine block and pulling off my turbo I noticed a nice "present" waiting for me. Still debating on what I want to do. Maybe I will buy a new engine short block but I don't know if my heads are damaged. Or I can do what my Scion corporate rep said and put everything back to sock--which would be easy right now since my turbo is off--and bring it to the nearest Scion dealership to be fixed. Choices...

Any opinions? Thanks

Do you have any links/posts for 2014's having this issue?

Is it just me or has more than 1 short block failed in the exact same place on this board? I swear to God I've seen this failure point before.

Update 9:
28 Nov 2013

Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF):HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Ok, I was able to take some pictures after removing the oil pan. You can see that the piston rod is jammed into the side of the engine block. If I were to assess which cylinder it is it would be the rear passenger side. I'm curious if the variable valve timing caused this. More than likely, that whole cylinder and head is pretty much destroyed.

Car is back to 100% stock. Time to bring it to Toyota and see if they will fix it. This will be a LONG process but it's better than buying a new engine block right now. Plus, it's winter so it could be in my favor.

Fuck that's awful. Sorry to hear and see that happen. Keep us up to date on the situation. And, HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you too! We need a black friday on parts!

So I should update mine as well. I had this code thrown the last day at Tail of the Dragon. Drove home for about 4 hours with no issues but the code was there. After I got home I let it sit for a month while I was busy with other things and waiting on some ability to research, order the part and line up time to fix it. In that time I moved it out of the garage once and then didn't touch it until a few days after my post showing the intake cam actuator which is ~$200 shipped from a dealer in ATL. Better than my local dealer wanting $275 after tax.

I wanted to do a data log the day before I was gonna tear into the motor and went downstairs to do it with a friend. Couldn't load the log because I didn't have the right file... blah. So I said hell with it, lets go for a light drive. Drove the car with no issues, didn't really get into boost much and all seemed well. After a mile or two I noticed that the "loss of traction light" (not sure what that's called that shows up in the tach) went off. The next day I drove the car to my Jordan's where we were gonna get started on everything. The CEL was on but the traction light was still off. Cranked the car up one more time and it was gone. I'm not complaining, I'm happy but very confused. I still have the part and I'm trying to drive the car more frequently (just turned 6k miles ) but it's the most interesting/odd thing.

I'm just gonna keep driving the car and see how things go.

Sounds like what happened with my car for the first month before the engine blew. I was talking with my tuner today and with this car having so many issues with the ECU it could ultimately damage the engine, like in my case. To elaborate more, the ECU could fail at giving the Variable Valve Timing Control the right input on how long the valves should stay open/closed causing an engine catastrophic failure. I'm assessing that was the case with my car. A new ECU could take at least 6 months before getting a replacement since Toyota has been using all their back stock ECU's for warranty claims.

If you are willing to give my route a shot on reverting the car back to stock and trying to do a warranty claim, then I'd say keep experimenting. But for the most part you might have a faulty ECU, sensor, etc. I will find out next week if the dealership is going to work on my car. Finally got the car back to 99% stock other than a sound system, etc.

That really blows man and I hope the lemon law stuff works out. It's pretty shitty that you had to claim the lemon law when Toyota knows this is a serious issue and should just replace the car or components (with working ones lol). Best of luck buddy.

For some reason I believe that Subaru has been dealing with these issues a lot more professionally than Toyota/Scion. Honestly, why did Toyota wait a year to put out a Technical Service Board (TSB) announcement about the Variable Valve Timing and ECU issues. It's good to hear Subaru is taking care of you!! Best of luck

Let us know how it goes and what you've done. My understanding is that they won't or "can't" look at the car when A) I reflash the ECU to stock and clear out the previous codes and B) I can't get the code to show back up. If I go back to stock and I don't get a CEL then what? Or can we reflash and keep the CEL log?

Also, why no new CEL if the car is failing to correctly open the valves? Shouldn't it keep showing the issue and not clear itself like it did?

Dealership couldn't get my car to "replicate the issue" and told me not to worry about it... I'm guessing it got the sunshine treatment... jerks.

I would highly recommend you log that information in a spread sheet or notebook and if you feel wronged I would seriously contact Scion and start a claims case. Some dealerships have been pushing people away just because they don't want to get involved or don't have the time. Sorry to hear man.
