Oil Analysis - 1st oil change

I had Blackstone perform a full analysis of my first oil change on the BRZ. It ran a bit longer than I had planned on, just based on free time and how much I end up driving everyday, but I managed to get one done at 4500 miles.

I checked my oil about twice a week and never noticed the need to add some. I would say an earlier oil change may have helped since there was a good deal of metal in it. The subie oil (with stock filter) holds up well though so I'm going to push the oil change interval up to the manual's 7500 miles and see what happens. This is driving 100 miles a day on the highway with very little playtime on the car so the oil may break down in a non-DD situation.

Second oil change!

Still in good shape, going 7500 next.

Third oil change

Somebody stole my Moly! Felt alright all the way till I changed it but somewhere in the back of my mind I was thinking it was better just before 7k than approaching 8k. So I believe I'm sticking with a 7k mile change cycle.

lucky number 4! Conclusions, stock oil is great. Holds up to life, gets decent gas mileage but stole all my moly.

Due to a series of out of town trips and general laziness I let this change ride for awhile. Over 2k more then you're supposed to (don't tell Subaru). This is still stock oil and stock filters although the oil bottles keep changing their look so I'm sure the formulas are changing as well.

ANOTHER oil change, not even a year and a half yet...

Lucky Number 7!!!

Partially due to laziness and mostly because "what the heck it's out of warranty anyways" I ran this oil up and over 11k miles. Still just Subie oil and filter, didn't add anything in between and sure enough it comes out fine. So maybe seeing this some of you will rethink the 3k mile oil changes using liquid gold.

I've never seen that before, or been aware of it. How much does that run? I'd be interested in getting this done on mine.

They send you the oil sampling kit for free, then you pay $25 for a standard analysis and an extra $10 for the TBN. Blackstone says a TBN should be used for evaluating the life left in the oil, so if you want to extend your oil change interval it is a good check. To send the kit back I think it cost like $2-3 shipping at the Post office.

I'll do another full analysis after 7500 miles to see what that looks like. Should only take about 10 weeks :P

Dont know if it really bothers you, but you may want to remove your address and phone number from the attached doc.

This is very good info and a great way to make sure this engine lasts you a good amount of years. Planning on doing this after break in.

The car is hitting 10k miles today and very close to the next oil change interval of 6k miles. Should be doing an oil change by next weekend then I'll post the results which only take a few days.

Would be nice to see someone put a filter mag or HD magnets on their FR-S so we can see if it makes a huge difference or not. I will be putting on HD Magnets on my filter when my FR-S arrives.

If someone can do a filter mag and compare that would be a good way to see if they work. Doing it at the same time too but I dont know if it would be good to wait that many miles as a lot of people say to do it earlier. And by your report it looks as if you should since their is metal in there.

It's an initial break-in oil change. There's going to be metal traces in the oil but if it was majorly harmful they'd have you change the oil sooner. I'm just used to oil being beat up after 3k and this stuff looked great at 4500.

No time to do a change during the week so I won't have a test till next week.

I just send my first oil change in to Blackstone this week. I installed a Power Enterprise filter that has magnets in it along with Motul 300V so When I do that oil change, I'll be able to report the differences between the two.

I had just a tiny bit above 2K miles when I did the change. The engine runs a LOT smoother now. I'm curious to see how much, if any, my gas mileage increases. It should go up a little. I won't be changing my oil again for quite some time though. So the comparison with the 2 reports won't happen for months.

I do keep a blog *somewhat* regularly updated with different things I do to my car at: http://www.myhachiroku.com if anyone is interested. Not a lot of info there just yet, but I plan to add more eventually.

The sort of analysis done there has the particulates filtered out already. This is just the oil itself. Most of the metals listed are added to the oil to modify the lubrication properties. This sort of report needs a comparison to the undriven oil to really tell you what happened in the engine.

The comparison won't be equal, if your second oil change has anywhere near the amount of metal the first should show that means you're eating the block or other parts.
