Revised Toyota GT86 Gets Lower Entry Price and New Editions in the UK

Quote:
Toyota is reshuffling its GT 86 range in the UK with the release of a new entry version priced from as low as £22,495 and the addition the new Aero and special edition Giallo models.

The revised four-model line-up starts with the Primo priced at £22,995, cutting the cost of a new GT86 by £2,115, while for a limited time, early customers can take advantage of an additional £500 saving that reduces the price to £22,495.

Available only with a six-speed manual, the Primo has 17-inch alloys, limited-slip differential, aluminum sports pedals, air conditioning, power-folding door mirrors, front fog lamps, twin tailpipes, the Toyota Touch multimedia system, Bluetooth and a new tyre pressure monitoring system. First deliveries are scheduled for January.

The classic GT86 continues and is priced from £24,995 adding a rear spoiler, keyless entry, push-button start, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, dusk-sensing HID headlights, LED daytime running lights and the option of a 6sp automatic (£1,000).

Another new entry in the range is the GT 86 Aero that sports a body kit with a large rear spoiler and front, side and rear aprons, plus new 18-inch OZ Ultraleggera alloy wheels.

Toyota is also introducing a new special edition model named Giallo that adds black leather seats (heated up front), side decals, gloss black door mirror housings and a Giallo yellow metallic paintwork.

All models can be ordered with a new optional Carbon Pack that adds carbon-effect door mirror covers and rear bumper protection plate, plus rear parking sensors.

They still pay more for the new "entry" model than US buyers do for the top end BRZ or RS1.0 FR-S.

"Pay more" really isn't accurate when it comes to international prices. Although the price may be more in dollars it is geared to incomes and national economic conditions.
In Canada we can pay as much as $30K for a base model but that is due to higher average income levels not increased "prices".
A $5 sandwich in the States may cost $7 here, $9 in Europe and $2 in China even though the amount paid takes exactly the same percentage of income in each place.
Not exactly an economics expert so I may not have explained this well but gave it my best shot!

Has the GT86 always had the light headliner? Those sun shades also look to be a bit less plasticky.

I agree that pay more can be misleading. However, the median household income in the UK is 26500 pounds (42633 USD). The median household income in the US is ($51900). Both numbers are from 2012 but are essentially unchanged for 2013. In this case it seems like buyers in the UK are paying a higher percentage of their income for a low end model than US customers are paying for the high end models.

That may explain why the Toyota Vice President in Europe says that the GT86 is not meeting sales expectations. Just a few months ago Subaru lowered their European prices for the BRZ over $2000 dollars.

Ever see the colour under the hood where they didn't clear coat them?
They ARE brown!
Without the clear coat it looks like a colour out of the 1984 K car line up.

This new interior looks good. It makes me think the second gen FRS will be a very nice car.

I come from the UK but have lived in America to I will try to explain a few things.

First household incomes is not a fair comparison. In Europe a lot of families only have one person working full time and we get a lot of vacation time. I personally am an Electronics Hardware engineer with 6 years experience and get 39 days full paid time off including public holidays. This extra holiday lower the annual salary as they are an expense none the less.

Also cost of living is different. In the UK food is cheap but anything else is 20% taxed but we have the NHS which as much as we may complain is relatively cheap. A regular family can pay $1000/month health insurance and still have to pay more when you cut your finger and need to visit ER.

Income tax is different too. My wife was earning as a nurse in Colorado and was taking home less than me on a similar salary in the UK at the time. She was paying $360/month heath insurance and it was basic cover too. She was slim, young and didn't smoke.

Now on to the gt86. Firstly the base model is still higher spec than the Scion FRS. It still has Fog lights, nice chrome exhaust tips, folding mirrors , 6 inch touch screen media, nice soft touch bits for you legs and shoulder...... I am sure there is more but that was first glance.

The prices you see in the UK are "drive it out of the door" prices including 3 days of motor insurance. The main killer is the 20% TAX. Deduct the tax and delivery/registration/road tax and the base car is about £18k ($27k)....
