Have you ever noticed...

Going on almost 7 years and 150,000 miles with the 86, I thought I had noticed everything there was to notice. Then, there was last night.

As I was sitting at a stoplight I noticed that the window switch on the passenger side was not lit but the lock switch was fine. I then noticed it was also off on my side.

I thought to myself, great, its one of two things. Either (1) I've reached the point of inevitability where the internal lights start burning out one at a time and you have to start deciding, do I replace the switch, or do I just let it go, or (2) there is something wrong with the passenger side window.

After a couple of seconds, it occurred to me to try the Window lock. Sure enough, when you hit the window lock the lights on the switches turn on and off. That's a nice touch that maybe everyone but me knew about with the 86.

Which app do you prefer for tracking your mileage? I was using something called Mileage and now Fuelio, you? Do you run any fuel injector cleaner or make any maintenance changes that impact MPG?

I noticed a dip in MPG changing tires from stock Primacy to Pilot Super Sports.

Originally I was doing it manually in Excel. I would text myself the current mileage, the price and amount of fuel then enter it into the spreadsheet. Eventually I switched to Fuelly because it would allow me to import all that information I already had. That is what I'm using now (see my signature for the link to the info).

I'm not doing anything special in terms of fuel treatments and such. In fact (I'm a little ashamed to admit) I still have the original plugs in the car. I was going to take it in for a change at 120K when the valve spring recall popped up. Now I'm just going to have it done whenever I get it in for that work.

The Bridgestones I switched to are all-weather touring tires and not performance tires so I didn't see any drop. They meet my day-to-day needs pretty well, and last about 60,000 miles.

One upgrade/replacement I need to add here although I've mentioned it elsewhere.

I recently changed out the headlight bulbs for LED bulbs. I originally was only going to do the low beams, but there was such a vast difference in color I decided to do both. It was a vast improvement in the light output and doesn't seem to impact cutoff with no bleed over. The highs no longer dim as DRLs but since it is daylight it doesn't really impact anyone (I checked it myself from another car). I just have to remember to turn on the low beams when its starts getting dark, but I'm pretty good at that. I may eventually turn them off though.

I used these which come in both the low and high beam size.

Valve Spring Recall Update

My car was "eligible" for the infamous valve spring update.

I had it done in early January at AutoNation Toyota in Lithia Springs, GA (the dealership where I purchased the car). Their most senior tech did the recall and mine was the 5th he had done.

They also changed the plugs for the cost of parts, no labor.

I'm now at 4,331 miles AVS (after valve spring) as of last refill and no obvious issues, and no detriment in performance.

Fuel economy has stayed steady (the average since the recall has been 33.05 vs 33.15 lifetime). Interestingly, the last 3 tanks have averaged 34.25, with no change in driving habits, route or any unusual road trips.

So far so good.

Happy 7th Anniversary!

OK, technically a day early.....but since I filled up yesterday I figured it was time for my annual roundup of where I am with some of the "mileage goals" I've been tracking since purchasing the car. So here you go:

150,000 miles and still going strong!

Reached 150,000 miles on my way in to work this AM! I think I'll take the long, windy way home tonight to celebrate!

So time to update the "goal matrix" below.

One thing that I find odd or interesting. My fuel calculations on my commute over the last 8 weeks have risen. My five fill-ups in July (for example) averaged 35.1MPG with no change in route or driving habits and no "road trips".

Your route should have really few stops to have such good mileage. Are you driving in manual mode?

My route is a rural route that varies from 30MPH to 60MPH. The average speed over it is just around 40MPH, with a handful of stoplights, and a train track (I get stopped there for up to 10 minutes about once a week).

I drive in manual mode about 30% of the time but not normally on my commute. On non-commute trips, I probably drive on manual about 50% of the time. I also use the paddles quite frequently to downshift in AT mode.

Thanks! My FRS is also AT, I usually drive manual unless the road is really boring.

I have installed dual-resonated HKS front pipe and 2017+ catted header recently without any change in tune. I think I am getting +2 mpg with this setup. I bought the header on ebay with very few miles for just $200. In case you want to try.

One Year Post Recall Work

I just passed the one year (1/21/2019) and 23,972 miles since I had the infamous valve recall work done. That was quick!

I did more highway miles in that year than is normal for me, so the engine was working at as much full speed ahead as it can short of doing track work.

During the year, no issues related to the repair as far as I can tell. My MPG average was above my normal average at 34.60 MPG over 68 fillups during the year. The previous (pre-recall) had been 33.27MPG over 61 fillups.

At at total of 159,934 miles the engine seems to still be going strong, no issues to speak of (as I bang my head on my wooden desk just in case).

I guess I can say I'm in the lucky majority that had the work done correctly at this point.

LOL I avg like 23 MPG. I only use cruise control if it might save me a fuel stop and I otherwise couldn't make up the 3 minutes.

I almost never use cruise control (probably less than 15% of my driving). I think it's a combination of the AT and the majority of my driving being at some magic speed of around 50MPH during my normal commute, parts higher, parts lower but that about what it averages out to in the end.

Yeah that's the real reason the speed limit was 55 across the (US) country for a while. Nothing to with safety, a lot to do with the Arab oil embargo.
