cheap yes, but valvoline is one of the lowest VI , like 162

Comparatively VI on toyota and subaru oil have much more moly, zddp and usually rank with VI exceeding 190's; the Toy and subaru SM formulations exceeded 200 VI!

Its your car, if you think cheap oil is what you wanna run, kudos to u, more beer money...

my background in chemistry tells me to not use cheapy oil on a flat tappet cam or a boxxer motor, and one thats not broken in especially, its no coincidence the UOA of factory fill shows oodles of additives.

I cough up coin to stay in spec, and grade. the two are different, not all 0w-20s are the same

if you dont know what VI is spend a moment on googling BITOG

That said, i just paid $12 a quart for Eneos Sustina 0w-20, and about the same for GC 0w-30

I did my first oil change with it on Monday (putting in 5.5 qts). I'll report any comments but so far so good. I don't really notice the car being much quieter as others have mentioned after doing their first oil changes with other oils.

You're talking about a 2 litre engine that makes a whopping 200 horsepower. Any name brand oil off the shelf will work just fine.

$12/quart for some boutique oil in this vehicle seems like overkill imo. But if it makes you sleep better,

Thanks for posting about this.

After seeing this thread, I called my local Subaru dealership to ask about the OEM filter, and to ask if they had any opinion on NAPA oil. Turns out the parts manager owns a BRZ, and he jumped on this deal and used it for his first oil change.

So I reserved two cases.

Platinum filter is $12.94 and is made for running synthetic oil.

This is the first time I have heard about using a special filter for synthetic oil, but then I live a sheltered life.

They have an internal screen/mesh supporting the filter media from what I've read on the filter sites. I used to have a Pontiac G5 GT that had a cartridge type filter element and when I'd take out the old one, it would be slightly deformed and wrinkled looking.

We carry and run 0w20 Amsoil OE in our FR-S. At 5.50 a court it is not expensive but still a very quality oil. We have FRS/BRZ oil filters in stock so contact us and set up an appointment for your oil change.
