We're taking the southern route and planning about 2 week journey to enjoy the sights. If you plan to drive to CA and then Back i would drive through the center on the way out and take the southern route across on the way back. A month would be plenty of time but i would say to enjoy yourself, give it a minimum of three weeks so your not killing yourself with long drives back to back.
