I found myself in the same boat not too long ago, on how much fun I had with my 1986 Honda Prelude si, but then again I was in high school when I drove that car. I feel like im ready for a "big boy toy" but I'm very pleased with the 86. I wonder if what the color palette would be on the next gen if they even decide to change it. I really like the red on the q60 sport

If I was an Emory, Singer, Ruff, etc. and dedicated to 86 like they’re dedicated to 911 this (old world targa style panels) would be my first major body style modification. The ND RF seems too mechanically complex for my old man/old school aesthetics. |

As for why it was used, well, you could go with the marketing, me, I believe it was more to do with the collaboration between Toyota and Subaru, Toyota supplied the backing and D-4S, Subaru, the 99% of parts and manufacturing plant. But again, that is my opinion on why a boxer was used. In the end, if my views or opinions are different to yours, feel free to tell me what I should think, ensure you use caps though, that always helps prove your point. Bring on 2022, by then, maybe some assumptions will be made fact.

Difficult and ill-advised to try to make a car intended as a fixed-roof coupe into an open-top roadster. Again, you're gonna add weight and sacrifice stiffness, there's just no way around it. The roof as a shear panel is just soooo structurally efficient. |

IIRC the 86 had been originally designed with a convertible variant in mind.

You can find pics of the convertible FRS all over Google Images...
I'm sorry to say this, but they just look... wrong. EDIT: Bonus pic I couldn't even point to what it is that I dislike in that design, but my brain tells me something is off there. |

It’s missing a wing! And proper convertible top covers on either rear corner of the interior area. Otherwise it looks awesome

Supra sounds like a cool car to own, wish it was manual though. By the time you're ready to trade in the Supra the second gen twins would've likely been out a while and you could get a second gen then. |

Even when they showed it they made it clear it wasn't coming nor was "originally" planned as one as rumour said. "Dealers in the U.S. were pushing for the convertible project to happen as demand was gauged to be high in the North American market. Scion took the lead and even investigated the engineering aspects of the project. Murtha said, "We took the lead on that within North America. We started doing some of the engineering investigation. We could not build a business case."

It's the rear seats. Makes the cabin look too long for what otherwise looks like a roadster. But the trunk would look too long without them. It's just not dimensioned to look good as a convertible.
