So let's start a discussion. Maybe a philosophical discussion...

When is it a build?

Bonus Q: At what point can you put that annoying "Built not bought" sticker on it?

And end with my personal favorite.
When is it so built that it no longer qualifies to be classed as the same car but just something that is only the same basic shape as what it started as?

I'm just poking fun, it is from a motorcycle site.

I am firmly from "when you have an extra $100 put it in the jar for the next vehicle camp" rather than "what farkle can I buy next?" group.

Most of my stuff is 100% stock, but I have been able to acquire a bunch of stuff.

When things are new it is cool to modify them to set them apart from the masses of other similar vehicles, but once they swing past 10 years old it might be cooler and rarer to see a bone stock vehicle. Of course most people do not keep vehicles that long.

I bought my truck new 11 years ago. and I have had one of my motorcycles for almost 25 years. Both are pretty much stock.

It's never OK to put a "built not bought" sticker on your car, or say it to other people, or think it to yourself.

When you put a Ferrari V8 into what was once a bare FR-S shell?

Heck, I don't even consider my car to be 'custom', because I have yet to take a sawz-all and welder to it.

"Built" involves raw materials, and hand fabrication in my book.

A build is when you:

1.) Spend more on parts than your student loan or rent
2.) Spend more time with your car than your gf/bf/wife/husband
3.) Started to think anything OEM isn't good enough even though you hardly track or AutoX

Closely related to the car restoration debate: "How much can you replace and still have the car be a classic and not be a rebody?"

There are more than a few rust buckets VINs that are essentially new cars.

Don't get me started on "Tribute" cars.
