It's not direct heat so much as it is radiation and IR radiation. Gold is specially suited to filtering out/blocking IR and other types of radiation, which causes a transfer of heat energy upon impact with a solid body (and why radioactive metals are warm to the touch).

For the same reason, it's effective in cars at blocking radiated heat, although a small buffer layer (foam, etc...) would drastically enhance that effect.

If anyone's doing this to lower intake temps.. which they obviously are. Don't forget to BYPASS the radiator plumbing on the throttle body. That gets hot to the touch after 15mins of normal driving.

Here's my updated intake.

Pics or a DIY for this would be great, as well as part number for a bypass coupler.

Doesn't need a new part, just unhook the radiator tubing off the TB and route back into the system, just bypass the TB altogether. Not recommended in VERY cold climates though, the reason the radiator passes through the TB is so the butterfly doesn't freeze solid and can open/close.

** go through my build thread around where I bought my TODA big throttle body, it will show the pipes for the radiator hosing, just don't connect those up.

UPDATE: Found it

Just install the TB like that...WITHOUT hooking up those two connectors. Easy done. One of the hoses *should* be long enough to plug it back into the radiator system.
