theres a video there too
I get this as well but when I examined, seems to be the sensor going in and out? Wasn't overly concerned...

Edit: your noise seems to be a bit louder than mine, with a bit more 'pop'. Mine is more like a 'click', will take a look next time and compare.

I also noticed that there seems to be 2 sounds in your video - a click on every push and release (similar to mine) but also a pop once every while (not on every engagement).

yes, there are 2 sounds. on push and on release. Not sure which pop every once in a while you're talking about, now I'm confused, lol. The pops don't happen every push and release. But I can get it to happen consistently.

drove my frs into work this morning and couldn't notice it unless I had music on mute

Haha sorry for the confusion; the last ~10 seconds or so of your video, there are 2 distinct sounds, one is more of a slight click, which happens on every push and release whereas the other is more of a 'poppy' click, which happens ~60% of the time or so.

Now, it has been a while since I did this mod so perhaps the first of the two sounds (one that always occurs) is part of the normal operation of the clutch and I just can't remember what it used to sound like when stock (perhaps the slight sound of pushing in and letting off of the gear indicator white sensor head).

However, I think you're referring to the second sound that occurs about ~60% of the time and has more of a 'poppy' tone

Lol yes, I am talking about the one where I move to above the dash, and it is very audible. I think the other one you are talking about is just simply normal operation of the clutch

I did modify the technique discussed however, Subaru didn't intend for you to spin the metal rod to adjust the clutch.

I took off the safety clip, squeezed the plastic safety clip on the pin and took out the pin then pulled the rod down and spun the long "u" shaped bit down, took two tries to get it at a point I liked but it was much easier that trying to spin the rod. Also the gear indicator and cruise worked without adjustment.
Could you please elaborate on why you shouldn't spin the rod? Is there a net difference between the two methods when complete or is it just for ease of completion that you spun the U bracket instead?

Thanks!

Spinning the rod could score the cup it's seated in and if there's any sealing there, damage it. Not too mention it's about a billion times easier to adjust the clutch as intended.

I'm not prepared to make sweeping statements about what spinning the rod would or won't damage. What I will say (and this comes from several years spent working on airplanes, 10+ years of working on cars, my lifespan helping my dad work on things, and my perspective as an engineering student; take it for whatever that's worth to you.)

Working on things in amanner they weren't intended to be worked on is, generally speaking, bad maintenance practice. When you're doing it for no benefit to the process and potential harm it's foolish. There is nothing gained by spinning the rod vs. popping the clip and spinning the bracket, so why do it?

@s0sl0w I did the adjustment per the instructions on the first page, and didn't read about spinning the u-bracket until much later. It was really easy for me to spin the rod and it didn't seem to damage anything. Too late now I guess! We need a master tech to chime in here

Like I said, It probably won't, but there are good reason's not to all the same.

I pm'd the OP requesting that he add my suggestion to his OP; we'll see.

Different issue - the spring won't return my clutch all the way back up now. I have to pull the pedal with my toes up about 25% of the time for the pedal to return to the top of its travel. I adjusted the pedal back up a little higher but still having the same problem.

Anyone else with the same issue?

Considered doing this but forget it now! Let me know when you resolve this issue. I am curious about what is going on here.

What level is your clutch at, compared to your brake pedal?

Pretty much level. I didn't measure it with a ruler; I kept adjusting it until I was happy with how the pedal felt and how it engaged. I'll try to measure it today.

See my posts here and here.

I had a concern this might be a problem. There's tension on the pedal both ways, but I can see how it might be possible to get stuck between if the clutch is adjusted too low. Try making it a couple mm above the brake pedal and see if you can regain some of the outward tension.
