I haven't seen the new one but the original sucked ass. The common complaint was that it was impossible to follow without first having read the book.

What was even worse was if you had read the book they still fkd alot of it up.
Best one IMO is still the SciFi(now Syfy...) miniseries minus the weird ass costumes in the first part.

My wife doesn't like scifi, so not to rock the boat I have tried watching Dune 1 in short 5/10mins shots, not working for me.. The guys at work raving about it and the book.. I stuggled with Lord of Rings stufff and Dune feels similar..

The 30min maintenance message has pushed me over to another forum.. It is just as informative but instead of cars, it's about wrist watches.. Needs must etc..

New one is the same. I'm asking my wife to clarify what is going on and she says, "You have to read the book first."

Same. I couldn't handle Lord of the Rings.

Having watched both, I can say the new movie is way better than the old one. Still probably a ton of context missing, but at least there is a plot.
Tried reading the book(s) way back and didn't really get into it.

I thought Dune Part 1 was good in general.

We’ve been down this road (or over this sand dune) at least twice before. If you don’t get it, YOU JUST DON’T GET IT! That’s fine, move on. However, it’s no reason to stomp it into the sand repeatedly. I’m not a book reader but my wife is and has read all of them including companions and treatises on both the authors and the books.
Yes there is much left out and much compressed in the movies. Yet, never having read the books I was able to follow and very much enjoy the 1984 movie. This in spite of Kyle MacLachian’s acting. The only disappointment I recall with the 2021 version was that it split the 1984 version into two parts.
I have the 1984 Dune on VHS, Laser disc and Blue Ray. (I was never able to obtain the uncut version with the nude scenes that was available on laser disc at a HUGE premium.) The multiple made for TV series I have on DVD’s but do not remember them as being all that well done. Jodorosky’s Dune I have on DVD.
Below are two links to earlier posts I have made and one for the Wikipedia page as reference.
