@atomicalex thanks - I'll try to get the readings you suggest. I'll upload a hi-res image shortly of one of the defect areas.

@humfrx - I am very certain this is not malicious. The NATA test agent I'm speaking to did suggest we could do 'FDR' analysis on the back side of some of the paint that had flaked off to do chemical analysis. But he was more suggesting this to determine if residual oil or other substances were present at the time of manufacture / painting that may have caused poor adhesion. I don't want to spend a fortune on tests if I don't have to - so I don't intend to do this unless I really have to.

I have similar 'defects'
I believe they are caused by bird shit (or other non-paint-friendly environmental debris) being allowed to sit on the paint for ~5 days based on my experience. 2-3 days gets you clear coat etching, I think after that it goes past the clear and destroys the paint underneath. Here's a thread with someone else posting their paint and I've got a pic in there of mine as well: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116099 Edit: Best of luck to you, it's not fun having to constantly worry about the crappy paint on this thing and if you can get a respray then great for you and your car. The more people that push on this the more likely Subieyota will step up. |

@strat61caster (cool name!) yours are likely from a chemical attack coming from the outside of the car. The eroded edges are what gives that away.
@staplesja The testing on the paint particles is actually critical for you. There are two tests. One looks at the back of the paint chips (FTIR) and the other looks at the cure behaviour of the chips (DMA). I personally think that your car got hit with some precured paint - crap from a poorly maintained spray bell or the ecoat line. A failure due to oil or other material on the body would be much splotchier and in very particular places. The clean edges and the condition of the edges indicates a big change in the material properties of the color coat (or ecoat, that is also possible and hard to tell without seeing the car personally). If it is ecoat cure residue, that is a huge issue and there are probably many cars affected. A poorly maintained spray bell, maybe one or two cars.

When the 'defects' are first discovered the edges are just as sharp as shown in the OP's high definition picture. I won't speculate further than saying mine would have looked nearly identical to the OP's when first created/noticed by me but I do understand where you're coming from. |

Dark grey? Yours could be a bunch of things, but the general area shape lends to bird crap. Which any modern paint should stand up to. Hell, my old Passat would be naked by now if it couldn't handle bird crap. The other option would be crap falling off jhooks on the ecoat line compromising the base adhesion, but that would have a more splattery shape.
I'm disappointed to see all of this. Modern pretreat and paint chemistry is pretty damn good when you do it right. And that is not rocket science!

I'll look into it (FTIR / DMA). Thanks a lot - really appreciate the comments.

bird poop or dead bugs on the paint? That will cause damage like your photos show.
Realized someone else said this but that’s definitely what it looks like. |

I can't be sure exactly when all of it happened; however, I noticed the bulk of it on the front bonnet after washing it in Jan. But a number of the other defects have appears subsequent to this but I can't be sure exactly when. Ta
