Not that the owners are sour, but there are oranges in every bag of apples in America. That's all. If you don't fuel the bitterness, it will just fade away. But the internet isn't helping in our case. ;(

I'm sure there are plenty of assholes that drive one of the twins...
Exactly what I was thinking. I have had a mixed bag. It is always a crackerjack surprise. Not too sure why, but, I have had Dodge Ram, Mazda 3, and Honda Civic asshats. But, at the same time I have had the same group of cars with opposite results.

The problem is insecurity of the owners and not the make or model of car.

This wouldn't be a problem if they just called it the Toyota 86 here.... jussayin'

I don't hate the tC, nor do I hate any car in the Scion line-up; they're good cars with bad marketing. I wish Toyota would keep the models and just kill off the Scion brand. They were dying before the 86 came along, and they're gonna continue to struggle even with the advent of the FR-S. The problem with Scion is that no-one knows what it is. I just spoke to a co-worker of mine who used to sell Toyota. He said the problem with selling Scion is that they have no brand identity. At the time certain features that were optional on cars like the Corolla (ABS, for example) were standard on the Scion models, making them a great value. But no one knew what they were, so they were a tough sell. If those models were offered as Toyotas for the same price, I think they wouldn've sold a lot more, and we wouldn't have this attitude towards Scion drivers, either. Even my co-worker agreed that they market to hipsters and "gangsta" kids.

Let me rephrase that: They're decent cars with bad marketing. I forgot about how miserably the xD drives. I'm sure the xA wasn't much better. I guess you can't expect too, too much from a $16k car, but I'd take a Honda Fit or Mazda 2 over them any day.

If $1200/mo for a 1-bdrm shocks you then don't even think about moving to CA
Regarding taxes and what people pay for their cars I think most people on here name the price for the car itself, before taxes and registration i.e. what the dealer takes from them, not the extra that the government scoops off. In most states you pay sales tax (and reg. fee) whenever a car changes hands, including a used car sold privately.

I think scion is ok, it's still "made" by Toyota
TCs are so common where I live
I won't be surprised if the frs gets as common in a year or two

I dunno, I for one am glad that it's not badged as a Toyota here in the states. Among 99% of people you meet in my neck of the woods Toyotas are just cars for old or narcoleptic people, much like Cadillac used to be. At least the Scion badge isn't known for being populated with owners who are members of AARP. Hell, my wife loves her Toyota Matrix because it's just so practical...not the marquee you'd think to associate the 86 with. Toyota may have meant something as a performance brand in the 80s and 90s, but after a decade of cars that by and large behave like warm wallpaper paste, nostalgia only gets you so far. Let's hope the FR-S is the first of what will be many and lead to a revival of fun cars in Toyotas stable.

That said, as a tC owner, I felt it was a good "My first new car". Got used to wrenching on my own car, took it to HPDE, track days, autoX ect. It was never a rocket, but it was quick enough, and it was cheap to mod and fix. Great entry into motorsports, and gave me a lot of appreciation for what the FR-S represents after years of getting the odd ride in friends S2000s, RX-8s, and Miatas.
