Need advice on selling my 2014 BRZ

Need advice on selling my 2014 BRZ. I wold like to know if the offer i received from Carmax is a good offer. They offered $16000 to buy it. I'm hesitant to sell it privately because I'm still making payments on it.

The car is a 2014 bone stock BRZ WR Blue, manual. Adult owned never tracked or abused with 24800 miles.
I love the car but i have to sell it because my wife and I just had a baby and need a bigger car.

Any advice is much appreciated
Thank you

According to Kelley Blue Book, that seems like a very reasonable offer from CarMax. $16,000 is the top of the trade-in value for your car (in very good condition) in your area. If sold to a private party, you could expect about $1500 more, so it's up to you to decide if it's worth the hassle.

CarMax usually does a pretty good job giving you a good price

Prices are very regional so take a look at what they are asking for used 14s of about the same mileage in your area. Keeping in mind that the prices you will find are retail and what they are asking not necessarily what they are getting. Once you settle on what the going retail is take two or 3 thousand off that and that will be a fair price for Carmax to be offering.

The offer isn't terrible. If you did sell privately I would not expect to get much over 18k for it.

Thanks for the reply Brayden_23 and Tcoat. In my area they are around 21~22k retail.
carmax has a very similar car for $21600 https://www.carmax.com/car/13761075

minus 3k then should i try for $18k?

Never hurts to ask for more. I was toying with trading in my BRZ when we bought the wife her jeep. Dealers 1st offer was 16k. I said no think I'll keep it thats not enough. Had them rerun the numbers and in the interest of trying the make the sale offered 18k for it. Mine had some mods and stuff done to it but mods dont add value in the trade in game so there could be more money to be had. My guess being they sell around 21-22k in your area that most you will get is an extra $500 (not that $500 isn't alot of money)

Its OK to be hesitant, but its perfectly fine to sell it privately while you are still making payments, there are just a few more steps in the process. The lien will need to be payed in full for the lien holder to release the title on the vehicle. So, the buyer's funds, plus any remainder if the selling price is less than what is owed, will need to clear at your lien holder. If the selling price is higher than what is owed, the lien is payed off with those funds, and the remainder goes to you. This usually adds an extra bit of time for processing/title transfers versus if you had the title in hand. Talk with your lien holder, they can probably walk you through the process as these types of sales are pretty common.

List the car for what you want for it, be up front with the buyer that you are still making payments and the process could take a little longer because of it. No need to disclose to the buyer how much you still owe on it though.

Congrats on the kid, and GLWS!

Thanks everyone. I will try to sell it on my own

Thanks everyone. I will try to sell it on my own.

My bank (chase) suggest just coming in with the new buyer and fill out the paperwork there. If the new buyer is financing (I.E. credit union etc.) the bank can send the title to the new bank.

If buying another vehicle why not just use it as a trade in? Yes, you may make a tiny bit more through a private sale but you could wait for a long time for the right buyer. Trading it is clean and easy and may be worth losing a little in the long run.

Just to add, I got $16k in trade-in on my 2013 FRS with 13k miles on it. So, your offer sounds alright.

If you have the time and patience, you will get a little bit more private party. Since you're not trading it in for another vehicle, you will not save anything on taxes on the trade-in (assuming that's how they do it in CA?).

OK I am confused then.
If not in a rush then yep do the private sale thing. Start with putting it on here since many have been sold through the forum (don't forget to follow all the rules though)
