Keep in mind, charcoal filters flow less freely. Filters with more restriction mean your fan won't blow quite as hard and A/C won't be quite as cold.

Same principle as a home air filter for central air and people who think buying a MERV 24 filter will keep them save from ebola, when all it does is freeze their condenser coil and jack up their electric bill. That's what home filtration units are for, air intake filters are for keeping your furnace and ducts clean so MERV 8-10 are more than adequate and much more efficient.

Granted, carbon is nice because air on freeways is pretty dirty, but during a hot summer when you want peak AC, may be a good time to consider a plain jane filter compared to an activated carbon one.

Honestly I'm looking forward to K&N making a washable/reusable unit for our cars since they're making them for others.

Now they do. K&N VF1013 Cabin Air Filter. From Amazon, the oem replaceable one is $25, and it may need replacing once every 25K miles. K&N is $42, but... (Edit) don't waste your time, I couldn't get mine to dry completely, even after 3 days. It still smells like a wet pig. It might work great for an air intake if someone could find the same size.

Or, buy one from the dealer, in paper form. K&N works great for engines. (Edited.)

Sweet. Got one used-like new inbound from amazon prime for $28, if it's no good, that's why boxes have return labels.

Thanks a TON for the heads-up!

The first thing I did when I got this new filter, was that I smelled it. I thought the rubber on the outside would smell, but it didn't. It was clean, and it had no odor. I installed it.

After just 1 day, my cabin smelled so bad, that I had to drive with my windows down. I removed the filter when I had the chance, and I cleaned it, (with their cleaning kit). It smelled pretty good, for a little while. About 24 short hours later, it smelled again. I realized something. If my interior smells like hell, even if it's not really that noticeable in small doses, it's time for a professional interior cleaning.

After my interior had a chance to dry from a good cleaning, I washed and installed my washable K&N in-cabin air filter again.

It smells like a new car.
Sorry, I didn't quite get it. Was the cabin filter what caused your car to smell in the first place?

Swapped mine out today, the car is a year old and ~11K miles. The filter was not too bad but it's simple to swap out. I went with the FRAM Fresh Breeze CF10549 too like a few others have

This fits perfectly and appears to be well made. I'm attaching a few pics to show the proper way to install this because it can be confusing with the arrows printed on the filter. The arrow on the original filter is not the airflow but and orientation mark (this side up) however, the airflow goes from top to bottom. There is an arrow on the FRAM filter that shows airflow so the arrow on the replacement filter should point down when installed properly.

I know the instructions say to remove the Damper from the pin but I was able to remove the filter without having to do that. It's not a tough thing to remove but there was enough room for me to get in there.
