Call Toyota corporate, you shouldn't have to cover this.

Honestly I give this to everyone: always try to work with multiple dealerships when you get answers like this. All dealers are not created equal.

Yes but warranty coverage is decided by the regional manager so going to another dealer in the same area won't help. Southeast denied my syncros claim because the tech sent pictures of my turbo in to him. Very illegal and I'm fighting it now. A different dealer said that's crazy and told me to sue the other dealer.

Nope, they don't.

Powertrain coverage is 5 years or 60,000 miles. The ignition coils are not considered powertrain items and are only listed for coverage for 3 years/36k.

They'd be covered by a customer's extended service agreement, or a customer's wallet.

I see it a lot at work with ignition coils on the early 3.5L V6's on the camry and Avalon - they're known for chewing through coils.

Your general rule of thumb for a powertrain component is an "internally lubricated part", or anything mechanical that supplies it with oil.

http://www.toyotacertified.com/ebroc...atinum_vsa.pdf

Basically, if you look at that link, anything listed in black is covered by the 5/60 powertrain warranty. Anything listed in red is covered 3/36 -- OR if the customer purchased a Platinum VSA/extended warranty, give or take a few exceptions.

If you doubt the dealer knows for sure if something is covered, buried deep in the DealerDaily resource we use is a giant list of EVERY powertrain (5/60) covered part. You can have your dealer run the first five digits of the failed part against this list to verify coverage. If we submit the claim to Toyota for reimbursement, and the part does not have a matching 5 digit prefix, the claim is bounced immediately and we are left on the hook for the repair.

You add power to a vehicle and the syncros wear yet you still want them to fix the problem?

No NOT even close to illegal. And in fact you fall into the category that the Mag-Moss act specifically addresses.

You modified a part of the car that caused a different part to fail prematurely.
The turbo clearly increases HP which the syncros need to absorb.
THEN they have the evidence that you drive more aggressively than the stock powerplant is intended for.

Let me guess - you also have an aftermarket clutch?

Should not the coils be covered under the 100K emission coverage required by law?

Coils are covered 3/36 or 3/50 in California - they are not long term emissions components. Federal coverage on the "high cost" or "long term" components are 8/80

Here's a page out of my warranty handbook at work - this shows coverage for Toyota/Scion products under the emissions warranty. Parts listed 8/80 are your "long term" or "high cost" components.

CA requires long term coverage to 150K on some parts if the car is PZEV certified. The twins are not.

Syncros have nothing to do with power.

Syncros have nothing to do with power or the clutch... The actual gear teeth, yes, but not the syncros.

Negative, as they're not considered "emissions" devices.

Not directly if you shift correctly.
However the manufacturer would correctly claim that boosting the car would be detrimental to every single piece of the drive train & rotating assembly down to the valve stems.
