Only $50K reservation fee to get on the list for 2020 or 21 or 22 or whenever they actually get around to making it.

That's pretty standard for a 4-seater with a targa top. Not sure I've ever seen one that was different than that.

I'm guessing Musk figures this will be the easiest way to get his rich buddies to help fund the R&D on the lesser models. Sort of the equivalent of getting a DVD box set of Nova when you donate to Public Broadcasting.

Not that I wouldn't take one if I could afford it although to me it's a bit understated for the cost. If I'm spending that much money on a supercar I want one that looks like a spaceship not a $25K 86 from profile.

Although it won't generate as much working capital as the Model 3 deposits, that move was sheer genius.

Getting an interest free $400M loan is pretty nifty.

Musk is brilliant, not at making cars but he continues to generate cash flow like no other company all the while Tesla has NEVER shown a profit.
Need cash, no problem lets roll out a less pricey car and take reservations.
Need more cash, no problem, roll out a semi truck
Wait, not enough cash from the truck, no problem roll out a roadster
Oh still not enough cash, make founders edition roadster and require 5 times the deposit of the regular roadster.

A car that needs the CPU managing a total of 7,375 lb.ft of torque in 3 to 4 motors to even drive in a straight line (and especially to accelerate while turning) is a totally different experience than nearly all cars today (even the modern hypercars.) People complained that driving the GT-R or a Bugatti was sterile and skillelss, like driving a video game in beginner mode, but this (not the GT-R) seems to be closer to that. It's performance driving described in software and metered out to the driver depending on their requests form the 'throttle'. Will it be fun. Going fast is fun, so no doubt. Will it stir the soul? Doubt it. At least not in the same way driving a finely tuned 20th century Sportscar is. Still as more and more cars like this reach production, it's a taste people will acquire. Is it good or bad?

Personally I'm more about Toyota's approach with the GR-HV. Which seems like they're trying to improve the current driving experience with hybrid electric power. Not totally replace the mechanical drive line with electric motors. Although that pseudo manual gearbox remains an open question. Overall prices will drop faster than Tesla can imagine. That $200k price will last as long as it takes GM to produce the same performance for $50k. I guess all of this is a big "we'll see". Electric Sportscars have been a long time coming. Good or bad, they're here.
