Awesome work! I think the Thule big mouth bike tray I have would mount directly to the your pegs. I'll definitely be rigging this up when I get my FR-S.

Here is my version of it

I used sections of the standard Yakima round tube with a Viper rack. I designed some steel adapters with 16mm threads and my friend turned them. The tubes slip over the adapters and a have long 3/8" bolts drawing them up to a shoulder on the adapters. The funny looking red thing is an adapter for 15mm thru axles on mtn bikes.

Was curious to see how this would with a thule sidearm roof rack, I used two stock factory tow hooks and welded a 1 1/8" bar to each since I don't have access to a lathe to get my mounting points. Got it all mounted up today, need to make a bracket/brace to hold it more stable, since I didn't mount it like its supposed to be on a roof (where the front wheel mount is actually mounted to the cross bar), if I did the bike would sit outside the passenger side of the car and a few feet in on the driver side. Its not a big deal, I trust it wont break or fall off or hit the car itself, just need to hold it more stable for my liking.

Great looking setup. I need to figure something like this out ASAP. No access to a machine shop so I need to figure that out.

Do you think you would try 2 bikes? I wonder if that would be over taxing the mounts or hurt the car. It would be really nice to mount 2- 20lb mountain bikes back there for a road trip.

Nice Niner by the way. (SIR9 SS Rigid here)

FWIW, I had a similar setup on my Boxster S. Except the rack was not bolted to the tow hook location. Instead, it was bolted to the bumperettes, which were aluminum and likely not nearly as strong as the tow hook location. I carried two bikes on there without issue.
That's certainly not a guarantee, but if I had to guess, I would say the OEM tow hooks could handle it just fine. As long as whatever you fab up is worthy, I say go for it.

2 mtn bikes in fork mount rails need to be spaced apart a bit because of the handlebars. With one bike there is not much moment arm but the 2nd bike hanging out there is going to add bit more load overhung. I took care to size the inserts close to the hole dia in the bumper to avoid a bending moment at the M16 threads. I would not do it unless I at least did a static load analysis on the solid turned inserts.

I recently picked up a 1upUSA Quik Rack hitch carrier (to carry one or two bikes on my kask2_6.0 hitch):

Pros:
  • Slick design, build quality, and craftsmanship
  • No rubber or fabric to deteriorate (except for safety strap)
  • Lightweight with one tray and bike is close to car (less moment/stress on hitch)
  • Stable
  • Centered (even my 29er doesn't stick out much on either side)
  • Convenient and quick operation (wheel trays > clamps/straps)
  • Modular (can carry up to three bike)
  • Small company
  • Made in USA
  • Great return policy and anti-theft guarantee
  • Folds up close to bumper and out of way (and doesn't block license plate when used with one or two trays)
  • Folds in half for storage
  • No assembly
  • Better ground clearance than most hitch racks
  • Trunk accessible with bike loaded (even without angling it down)
  • Easily transferrable to other vehicles (with 1.25" or 2" hitch)
Cons:
  • Expensive (cost of hitch + hitch rack > tow hooks + roof rack tray)
  • Safety strip a bit wimpy
  • Less ground clearance than tow hook solution
  • A bit heavy with three bikes (I'm not going to try more than two on this hitch)
Weight (not counting bikes):
  • 23 lbs: Rack with one tray
  • 18 lbs: Each additional tray

Looks fantastic. I have my bike carrier done, but I'm going to cut it down so it's shorter. Still considering two bikes, but fork mounted. We'll see.

Big question is, is the Kask hitch still for sale, anywhere?
